Work EnvironmentInternational circuits, high-tech teamsSupport races, similar circuits
Industry UsagePremier motorsport seriesDevelopment series for F1
Search & ComparisonOften compared for career progressionStepping stone to F1

Formula 1 Racing is the top-tier motorsport series featuring highly experienced drivers and advanced technology, while Formula 2 Racing serves as a development platform for aspiring F1 drivers, with similar circuits and industry usage but less complex credentials. Many enthusiasts compare the two to understand career pathways in motorsport.

How do Formula 1 team members typically collaborate to ensure peak performance on race weekends?

Formula 1 teams operate in a highly collaborative environment, where engineers, mechanics, strategists, drivers, and support staff work closely together to maximize race results. Effective communication is essential, especially during practice sessions, qualifying, and the race itself, as real-time data is shared and decisions are made quickly. Team members often face high-pressure situations that require adaptability and problem-solving skills, and they rely on each other's expertise to address challenges such as technical issues or changing weather conditions. This collaborative structure not only ensures the car's peak performance but also supports individual growth and learning within the team.

What is Formula 1 racing?

Formula 1 racing, often abbreviated as F1, is the highest class of international single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). F1 races, known as Grands Prix, are held on purpose-built circuits and public roads around the world, featuring the fastest and most technologically advanced cars. Teams and drivers compete in a series of races throughout the season, accumulating points to determine both individual and team championships. Formula 1 is renowned for its innovation, speed, and global fanbase.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Formula 1 Racing Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Formula 1 Racing Driver, you need exceptional driving skills, quick reflexes, in-depth knowledge of race strategy, and often a background in competitive karting or junior racing series. Familiarity with advanced telemetry systems, race simulators, and FIA super license certification are typically required. Outstanding mental focus, resilience under pressure, and strong teamwork and communication skills set top drivers apart. These capabilities are crucial for consistently delivering peak performance, making split-second decisions, and collaborating effectively with engineers and team members in an ultra-competitive environment.

Job description

GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC
ES Battery Cell Engineer - Onsite
Job Summary
GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking an ES Battery Cell Engineer to drive the development of high-power energy storage solutions for Formula 1. Based in Concord, NC, this role is central to delivering cell designs capable of sustained extreme power output, rapid charge/discharge transients, and controlled degradation over race-critical lifecycles. You will lead the design, validation, and optimization of next-generation lithium-ion cells, pushing the limits of power density and durability under aggressive F1 energy deployment and recover duty cycles and thermal constraints.
Key Responsibilities
  • Define cell-level requirements (power density, pulse capability, thermal limits, aging, safety) aligned to F1 ERS duty cycles and FIA regulations.
  • Lead end-to-end cell development from concept through validation, including electrode design trade-offs, format selection, and manufacturability considerations.
  • Own cell performance modeling and correlation (electrochemical + thermal), linking test data to system-level ERS performance.
  • Plan and execute validation campaigns under representative race conditions (high C-rate, aggressive cycling, thermal transients).
  • Drive supplier technical direction and accountability; manage cell design iterations, DVPs, and industrialization readiness.
  • Conduct hands-on testing: build, teardown, post-mortem analysis, and advanced diagnostics (HPPC, fast pulse characterization).
  • Analyze degradation mechanisms and lifetime under F1 duty profiles; create damage models and define mitigation strategies.
  • Lead DFMEA/PFMEA and safety assessments with focus on high-power failure modes and containment strategies.
  • Develop and refine test methods, instrumentation, and data pipelines for high-fidelity characterization.
  • Scout and mature next-gen chemistries and materials with clear pathways to F1 deployment.
  • Generate technical reports, design reviews, and decision frameworks for rapid program execution.

Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience in lithium-ion cell design or advanced cell testing, preferably in high-power or motorsport/high performance automotive applications.
  • Deep understanding of electrochemistry, cell physics, and degradation under high C-rate and thermal stress.
  • Experience with cell modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, PyBaMM) and test correlation.
  • Strong background in experimental design (DoE), statistics, and data analysis.
  • Hands-on expertise with cell test equipment and diagnostics.
  • Experience working with external cell suppliers and driving technical deliverables.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, abuse testing, and failure analysis.
  • Ability to operate in fast-paced, high-performance engineering environments with tight timelines.

Personal Attributes
  • Bias for action and ownership in high-pressure, time-critical programs.
  • Clear communicator who can translate cell behavior into system-level impact.
  • Curious, data-driven, and willing to challenge assumptions.
  • Collaborative mindset with the confidence to push suppliers and internal stakeholders.
