Department Overview

The Department of Psychiatry part of the OHSU Brain Institute, focuses on providing excellent clinical treatment to our patients, leading innovative research, and offering hands-on training for the next generation of psychiatrists. Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has an outstanding opportunity for a BE/BC psychiatrist interested in serving in our Psychiatric Emergency Service with Unity Center for Behavioral Health.

Unity Center for Behavioral Health offers emergency as well as inpatient mental health treatment for adults, including walk-in or drop-off services. We provide immediate psychiatric care and a path to stabilization and recovery for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, and utilizes a non-coercive, highly community-oriented treatment program, which prevents hospitalization when possible, and returns patients to community services as soon as feasible. This 100+ bed psychiatric hospital and large psychiatric emergency service in Portland, Oregon is a collaborative effort to address the mental health needs of the community.

UCBH is also a major training site for the department's residency training program, medical students, and other health profession's trainees. This is a unique opportunity for a creative, energetic psychiatrist to treat, teach and advance their academic interests, while cultivating the next generation of leaders in the field. Our mission is to provide top-tier clinical care while advancing knowledge in psychiatric practice, treatment modalities, and engaging in public outreach.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Function/Duties of Position

This position will provide patient care in the Psychiatric Emergency Service. Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) - Psychiatrist is responsible for the medical care and psychiatric evaluation of every patient in the PES that is in the facility during their shift.

 

  • Clinical Care: Provide direct psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to patients presenting to the PES with acute psychiatric conditions.
  • Teaching and Supervision: Mentor and teach medical students, psychiatry residents, and fellows in emergency psychiatry, including providing real-time supervision of clinical work.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for patients. Our team has a unique paired model where psychiatrists and social workers evaluate patients together.
  • Research Opportunities: Engage in clinical research to advance the field of emergency psychiatry, including the development of new treatment models, crisis intervention strategies, and patient outcome studies.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives to enhance care delivery, streamline patient flow, and improve access to essential health services such as preventative care in the emergency psychiatry setting.
Required Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. with board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry.
  • Experience and/or fellowship training in forensic psychiatry, addiction medicine, or public psychiatry is welcome.
  • Strong teaching and mentoring abilities, with a passion for educating the next generation of psychiatrists.
  • Demonstrated interest in academic psychiatry and research.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience, fellowship training and/or board certification in forensics, addictions, and/or public psychiatry
