Job description

Job Title: NPIS Sorter / Helper Department: 129 / 179

Special arrangement: Supervisor may temporarily limit duties to only sorter or helper to help with injury or soreness

Direct Reports: None

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sort trimmable and condemnable defects on moving poultry carcasses at 35 birds a minute
  • Prevent unwholesome product from continuing through process
  • Comply with plant and government regulations
  • Work with operations to correct problems upstream when identified at sorting
  • Attendance and punctuality at start up and after breaks is critical
  • Attention to detail and focus required to perform job duties
  • Maintain safe work areas and wear appropriate PPE for the job.
  • Maintain accurate tally of each defect and grower.
  • Rotate hourly between sorter and helper.
  • Capable of working in pairs and being a team player.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand, talk, and hear in a production environment, frequently required to use a knife to cut or trim, frequently lift (15 pounds) and transfer birds from the kill line to the salvage line for at least an hour at a time, vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust vision focus rapidly and ability to see defects, not susceptible to motion sickness, work is performed in a production setting with moderate noise levels, work is performed in a fluctuating temperature environment (typically 40 degrees to 75 degrees)

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Must be able to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of sorting as described/required by USDA for carcass sorters including passing of written and oral examinations
  • Ability to make accurate and rapid decisions based on observations on fast moving production lines
  • Food Safety prevention programs
  • Communication skills (listening, feedback, presentation)
  • In-depth knowledge of poultry pathology and quality
  • Knowledge of federal guidelines necessary to operating a slaughter facility
