Job Description
The Food Technologist focuses on prototype formulation, understanding ingredient functionality, and working with suppliers to source ingredients for new products. The Food Technologist also supports pilot plant production runs, shelf life studies, and learns the basic requirements to produce GMP products for testing.
  • Demonstrates and promotes the company vision
  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Applies GMP/GLP in all areas of responsibility, as appropriate
  • Under direction, executes bench-top experiments and formulation work, nutritional and component analysis, specification writing, shelf life studies, consumer studies, and/or sensory studies.
  • Documents work and maintains study documentation and laboratory records
  • Supports pilot plant trials; prepares samples for processing, operates processing and/or packaging equipment, and collects data.
  • Interfaces with ingredient suppliers; orders ingredients and requests documentation. Prepares, packages and sends product samples to clients and outside laboratories for evaluation and testing.
  • Assists in writing reports, methods, protocols and SOPs, and make suggestions for modifications in test methods and procedures.
  • Keeps updated and educated on relevant news, literature and findings in the industry.
  • Networks with individuals outside of The National Food Lab
  • Trains and assists less experienced staff
  • Completes all required training courses.
  • Learns and demonstrates departmental procedures and policies
  • Viewed as a resource across multiple teams
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.
Educational Background/Relevant Experience:
  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Food Science or an allied Science is required
  • Basic knowledge of Computer and Software Programs
  • Previous Product Development experience is a plus

Additional Information
A salaried compensational range for this role would be: $57,000-62,000
Other Factors:
Maintain a safe and orderly work environment, maintain, record, and review SOPs, maintain proper communication skills, work independently, exercise initiative and good judgment, and solve routine problems without assistance. Safely operate propane and electrical forklift trucks, climb ladders, frequently lift, carry and/or push light to heavy materials. as well as stand and walk most of the day. Flexibility to easily transition from one task to another.
  • Overtime and weekend work as plants required
  • Will be exposed to potential food allergens
  • Must use hearing protection, eye protection, proper footwear, lab coat, hairnets and gloves when necessary.
