Flying Probe information

What is a flying probe?

A Flying Probe tester is an automated testing machine used primarily in electronics manufacturing to check the functionality and connectivity of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Unlike traditional test fixtures, it uses moveable probes that 'fly' to various test points on the board, making it suitable for prototypes and small production runs. Flying Probe testers can detect issues such as open circuits, short circuits, and component placement errors without needing a custom fixture for each board design. This flexibility makes them a cost-effective solution for low- to medium-volume testing and quick turnaround times.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flying probe test engineer?

To thrive as a Flying Probe Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electronics, PCB testing principles, and troubleshooting, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with flying probe testers (such as those from Takaya or Acculogic), test software, and CAD systems is essential. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving abilities are critical soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure accurate fault detection and efficient testing, which are vital for maintaining high product quality in electronics manufacturing.

What are some common challenges faced by flying probe test engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Flying Probe Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing intermittent faults, managing varying test coverage requirements for different PCB designs, and optimizing test times. These can be addressed by staying updated on the latest test strategies, collaborating closely with design and production teams to clarify test points, and leveraging advanced software tools for efficient fault detection and analysis. Regular communication with engineering and quality assurance teams helps ensure the testing process aligns with overall production goals and quality standards.

What is the difference between Flying Probe vs Automated Test Engineer?

AspectFlying ProbeAutomated Test Engineer
CredentialsTechnical diploma or certification in electronics or PCB testingBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, PCB testing labsElectronics, software, and hardware testing environments
Industry UsagePCB manufacturing, electronics assemblyElectronics product development, quality assurance
Job FocusManual and semi-automated PCB testing using flying probe machinesDesign, develop, and maintain automated testing systems and scripts

Flying Probe technicians primarily operate testing equipment to verify PCB functionality, while Automated Test Engineers develop and manage automated testing systems. Both roles are essential in electronics manufacturing but differ in technical scope and responsibilities.

If you are a highly motivated individual with an entrepreneurial spirit, CSAT Solutions may have a career for you. We invite you to explore the current opportunities available at CSAT Solutions.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the role of a Test Engineer for AI server repair.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and engineering support for automated and manual test processes used to diagnose, validate, and repair AI servers, GPU assemblies, server motherboards, power systems, networking equipment, storage systems, and other high-performance computing hardware.
  • Develop, implement, validate, and maintain automated test programs, diagnostic procedures, test scripts, fixtures, and test equipment used throughout the AI server repair process.
  • Own assigned test processes and serve as the technical subject matter expert for test capability, test coverage, equipment performance, and process effectiveness.
  • Partner with customers, Quality, and Operations to identify and resolve test-related issues.
  • Develop test strategies that improve defect detection, reduce false failures, increase first-pass yield, and reduce repair cycle time.
  • Analyze test results, failure data, and first-pass yield to identify test gaps, recurring failure modes, process variation, and opportunities for improved test coverage.
  • Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and support repair of test systems, fixtures, cables, probes, instrumentation, and other test equipment.
  • Support development and implementation of test fixtures, tooling, adapters, automated test equipment, and specialized diagnostic systems for new and existing AI server platforms.
  • Evaluate repeat-return and warranty data with Quality and Engineering teams to identify systemic test escapes, product defects, and opportunities for improved diagnostics.
  • Develop closed-loop feedback mechanisms to ensure test results and repair findings are incorporated into test programs, repair procedures, and technician training.
  • Implement Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement methodologies within test areas to improve workplace organization, equipment utilization, throughput, and process efficiency.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to Engineering Technicians, Repair Technicians, Test Operators, and trainers on test processes, troubleshooting methods, equipment operation, and new product requirements.
  • Translate complex technical information into clear procedures, training materials, and troubleshooting guides appropriate for technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Develop and present test performance reports, KPI dashboards, technical findings, and improvement recommendations to engineering, operations, quality, and customer leadership.
  • Support customer audits, engineering reviews, NPI activities, product transitions, and technical escalations.
  • Maintain accurate test data, engineering records, equipment documentation, and test-program revision control.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to accomplish organizational objectives related to quality, throughput, cost, turnaround time, and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform other engineering projects and duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in test engineering, electronics manufacturing, PCB testing, automated test development, or electronics repair.
  • Experience supporting AI servers, enterprise servers, GPU platforms, networking equipment, high-performance computing, or complex electronic systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience developing test programs for automated test equipment (ATE), flying probe, in-circuit test (ICT), functional test, boundary scan, or similar test platforms.
  • Experience programming or scripting in C#, Python, C/C++, LabVIEW, or similar languages preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot printed circuit board assemblies to the component level using schematics, test equipment, and structured diagnostic methods.
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, component specifications, netlists, Gerber/ODB++ files, and manufacturing data.
  • Experience developing test fixtures, cables, adapters, interfaces, and other test hardware.
  • Experience performing test-program validation, correlation, GR&R, test coverage analysis, and test-limit optimization preferred.
  • Strong analytical and data-analysis capabilities; experience with Minitab or similar statistical analysis software preferred.
  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, and structured problem-solving methodologies preferred.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, engineers, technicians, operators, and management.
