What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Remote Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Remote Worker, you generally need relevant trade or professional qualifications (such as in mining, engineering, or construction), physical fitness, and the ability to work long shifts in remote locations. Familiarity with site-specific tools, safety management systems, and certifications like MSHA, OSHA, or site inductions are typically required. Resilience, strong communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for coping with isolation and collaborating effectively with diverse teams. These competencies ensure safety, productivity, and well-being in challenging, remote work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote workers, and how can they manage them?

FIFO remote workers often encounter challenges such as extended periods away from home, adapting to structured rosters, and maintaining work-life balance. The remote work environment typically involves long shifts and living in close quarters with colleagues, which can be both rewarding and demanding. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish strong communication with family, practice self-care, and leverage support services provided by employers, such as mental health resources and recreational activities during off-hours.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote jobs?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote jobs are positions where employees travel to a remote worksite, often in industries like mining, oil and gas, or construction, for a set period of time, and then return home for a scheduled break. Workers are typically flown in by their employer to locations that are difficult to commute to daily. While on site, employees usually stay in employer-provided accommodations and work long shifts before flying back home to rest. This arrangement allows companies to access skilled labor for remote projects and gives workers extended time off between work rotations.

Job description

Job Description:

POLITICO is seeking a reporter to join our breaking news team. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment for a job that could be different day-to-day. One day, you could be responsible for lightning-quick writing on major press events and announcements, and the next helming a broader story that narrates the big news moment of the day and leads coverage on our homepage.

Candidates should have a highly attuned "nose for news," understand social media, and be ready to cover a wide range of topics, from Washington to the states and major international news. They should be experienced covering news in a professional newsroom, with a solid understanding of what makes a daily news story stand out - and a willingness to pick up the phone to cold call sources to bring stories to the next level.

Who You Are:

  • You can write quickly, clearly and above all accurately in high pressure situations
  • You are able to write on a variety of topics, including the White House, political campaigns, congressional action and policy areas like defense or foreign affairs
  • You have a strong understanding of how rapid the news cycle is and the need for coverage in the moment
  • You foster a sense of cooperation and teamwork

What You'll Do:

  • Write urgent news stories, including breaking news alerts
  • Pitch and report out issue-related enterprise stories that fit POLITICO's core coverage and news sensibility
  • Work collaboratively with reporters and editors across our newsroom on individual stories and, more broadly, on distinct coverage areas

What You'll Need:

  • Experience covering daily news and an established ability to write quickly and accurately on tight deadlines
  • An eagerness to write about different subjects and switch coverage areas on the fly
  • Solid news judgment and a feel for stories that have "buzz"; A background covering Washington - or a state capital or major city government - is a plus

Submission materials:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter
  • 3-4 clips (PDFs or publicly accessible links)
  • Attach these items with your application under the"Resume/CV" section. Incomplete applications will not be considered
  • Application deadline: Friday, May 29, 5pm EST.

This position is location flexible. Candidates based near office locations -Arlington, VA (HQ), New York, NY or Sacramento, CA -will follow a hybrid schedule in the office. Remote candidates will be considered, and West Coast candidates are preferred. The salary range is $78,030-$90,000. Final salary will be based on experience and qualifications.

About Us.

POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence that anticipates tomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.

Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.

Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals-Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York-form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources others don't even know exist.

Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.

These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity in media: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.

POLITICO is a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE, a family-owned transatlantic media company headquartered in Berlin and New York. Axel Springer is dedicated to shaping the future of journalism in the free world, believing that a free and informed society is essential to democracy. The company's guiding principles - first articulated asThe Essentialsby founder Axel Springer in the aftermath of World War II - remain a cornerstone of the company's foundation today.Learn more about Axel Springer.
