As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for floral design in the United States is $17.93, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is floral design?

Floral design is the art and practice of creating arrangements, bouquets, and displays using flowers and other plant materials. Floral designers use their creativity and knowledge of plants to craft visually appealing compositions for events, special occasions, and everyday décor. The work involves selecting appropriate flowers, understanding color theory, and ensuring the longevity of arrangements. Floral designers may work in retail flower shops, event planning, or freelance for weddings and corporate events.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a floral designer?

To thrive as a Floral Designer, you need a solid understanding of floral arrangement principles, plant care, and color theory, often gained through vocational training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with floral design software, point-of-sale systems, and basic inventory management tools is also valuable. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong customer service skills help you craft unique arrangements and meet client needs. These skills are crucial for producing visually appealing designs, maintaining fresh inventory, and ensuring customer satisfaction in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges floral designers face during peak seasons, and how can they manage workload effectively?

During peak seasons like holidays and weddings, floral designers often experience high demand and tight deadlines, which can lead to increased stress and long working hours. To manage these challenges, it's important to prioritize tasks, coordinate closely with suppliers, and plan designs in advance. Many floral designers also rely on teamwork and clear communication to ensure smooth operations, especially when assembling large or complex arrangements. Staying organized and maintaining a flexible approach helps ensure quality work even during the busiest times.

What is the difference between Floral Design vs Event Planning?

AspectFloral DesignEvent Planning
CredentialsFloristry certifications, floral design coursesEvent planning certifications, project management skills
Work EnvironmentFlorist shops, event venues, clients' locationsEvent venues, client offices, conference centers
Industry UsageWeddings, parties, corporate eventsWeddings, conferences, festivals

While both roles involve event-related work, floral design focuses on creating floral arrangements and decorations, whereas event planning involves coordinating all aspects of an event. Floral designers typically work closely with clients to craft floral aesthetics, while event planners handle logistics, vendors, and overall event execution.

Do floral designers make a lot of money?

Floral designers typically earn a median annual wage that varies by location and experience, with many earning around $25,000 to $35,000. Experienced designers or those who own their own shops can earn higher incomes, especially with strong customer skills and creativity. Income often depends on factors such as skill level, business ownership, and the demand for floral arrangements.

How do I become a floral designer?

To become a floral designer, you typically need to develop skills in floral arrangement, often through formal education, apprenticeships, or on-the-job training. Many floral designers learn to use tools like floral foam, wire, and scissors, and obtaining certification from industry organizations can enhance credibility. Experience working in a retail or event setting is also valuable for building a portfolio and understanding customer preferences.

Is floral design a good career?

Floral design is a creative profession that involves arranging flowers and plants for events, retail, or personal use. It requires artistic skills, knowledge of flowers and tools, and often involves working in retail shops or event settings. Job prospects can vary based on location and experience, with opportunities for self-employment or working for floral shops.

Job description

Freelance / Project-Based

Rachel Cho Floral Design is a New York-based luxury floral studio where imagination meets refinement. We create immersive, artful environments that transform moments into lasting memories. From intimate celebrations to large-scale, sculptural installations, our work is driven by intention, elegance, and a deeply cultivated design sensibility.

We are seeking experienced, reliable Floral Designers (Freelance) to support our studio on a project-by-project basis. This role is ideal for designers who are confident working independently, highly responsive, and able to seamlessly integrate into an established luxury brand aesthetic while executing work to the highest standard.

Freelance Floral Designers will support events, installations, corporate work, and weekly floral production as needed, working under the creative direction of Senior and Lead Designers.

What You'll Do

  • Design and execute floral arrangements that align with the Rachel Cho Floral Design aesthetic, brand standards, and client expectations

  • Support event production, installations, and breakdowns for weddings, corporate events, and large-scale projects

  • Follow written instructions and creative direction regarding stem selection, color palette, scale, proportions, and overall look of arrangements

  • Execute floral designs efficiently and accurately in a fast-paced production environment

  • Assist with on-site styling, placement, and last-minute adjustments during events

  • Work collaboratively with internal teams while managing assigned tasks independently

  • Maintain professionalism, flexibility, and attention to detail throughout production days

  • Support general studio and production needs as assigned, including processing flowers, organizing product, and maintaining clean workspaces

Required Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience as a floral designer (event, wedding, corporate, or weekly work)

  • Strong understanding of floral mechanics, stem handling, and proper processing techniques

  • Ability to execute designs with consistency, efficiency, and attention to detail

  • Comfort working from creative direction, recipes, or visual references

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent communication skills and a positive, professional demeanor

  • Comfort communicating digitally using tools such as WhatsApp, Slack, and email

  • Availability to work early mornings, long production days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

Strongly Encouraged

  • Prior experience working within a luxury floral or event production environment

  • Familiarity with high-volume event workflows and on-site installation processes

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing production needs and timelines

  • A portfolio of previous floral work (professional, freelance, or studio-based; digital format preferred)

Who You Are

  • A motivated self-starter who takes initiative and manages work independently

  • Detail-oriented, reliable, and highly responsive

  • Calm under pressure and adaptable in fast-paced production settings

  • Passionate about flowers, craftsmanship, and elevated design

  • Respectful of brand standards and able to execute within an established aesthetic

  • A collaborative team player who contributes positively to the studio environment

Physical & Work Requirements

This freelance role requires the ability to work in a dynamic production and event environment. Designers must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods

  • Lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 30 pounds regularly

  • Work on their feet during long installation and production days (often 8-10+ hours)

  • Safely handle fragile and perishable materials including flowers, glass vessels, candles, and decor

  • Work in environments with temperature fluctuations, humidity, water, floral debris, and fragrances

  • Navigate loading docks, stairs, tight hallways, and crowded event venues

Application Note

Freelance designers are hired on an as-needed, project-based basis.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to submit a brief introduction along with a portfolio of relevant floral work.

Please note: We value clear, thoughtful communication. Any use of AI-generated language or automated writing tools in application materials will result in disqualification. We want to understand your real-world experience, skill level, and design sensibility.
