Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. Weโ€™ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. Weโ€™re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Quality Control Manager (Inspection Team)
Joby Aviation is seeking a Quality Control Manager to lead shop-floor Quality Control and Inspection teams across manufacturing operations. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Quality Control, this role directs daily quality control and hands-on inspection activities ensuring the safety, reliability, and conformity of aircraft parts.
APPLICANT NOTICE: This is a hands-on, floor-level Quality Control & Inspection leadership role; not a Design Engineering or Quality Engineering position. Candidates must have direct experience supervising or managing physical inspection teams and quality control operations in a manufacturing environment.

  • Lead, mentor, and manage assigned Quality Control inspectors and floor inspection leads across production facilities.
  • Ensure receiving, in-process, and final inspections are executed in compliance with engineering drawings, work instructions, and FAA standards.
  • Manage inspector shift scheduling and operational priorities to support production throughput.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality Engineering to improve physical inspection flow and reduce defect rates.
  • Oversee shop-floor Material Review Board (MRB) activities and nonconforming material control.
  • Monitor inspection metrics, first-pass yield, and quality trends to drive continuous process improvements.
  • Support failure investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and regulatory/QMS audits.

  • Minimum 6+ years of direct experience leading physical inspection teams or managing Quality Control shop-floor operations in a hardware manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree with 8+ years, Masterโ€™s with 6+ years, PhD with 3+ years, or 15+ years of relevant hands-on QC/inspection experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Proven leadership in managing, training, and qualifying quality inspectors.
  • Strong practical expertise with manufacturing inspection tools, measurement equipment, precision gauges, CMM, and GD&T principles.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Aerospace, aviation, automotive, or regulated manufacturing industry experience.
  • Note: Design engineering or general quality engineering backgrounds without direct inspection leadership experience will not qualify for this position.

  • Knowledge of FAA regulatory requirements (Part 21/145) and AS9100 / ISO 9001 QMS standards.
  • Experience with AS9102 First Article Inspections (FAI).
  • FAA A&P license, IA, or NDT certifications.
