Both roles require an RN license and similar certifications, but Float Rns are valued for their adaptability and broad skill set, making them essential for staffing coverage in diverse healthcare settings.

What are float RNs?

Float RNs, or float registered nurses, are nurses who are not assigned to a specific unit or department within a healthcare facility. Instead, they move between different units as needed, filling staffing gaps and providing care wherever there is the greatest need. Float RNs must be flexible, adaptable, and skilled in multiple areas of nursing, as they may work in various specialties such as medical-surgical, ICU, or emergency departments. This role is crucial for maintaining optimal patient care during staff shortages or unexpected increases in patient volume.

How does the work schedule and assignment process typically function for a Float RN within a hospital setting?

Float RNs usually work flexible schedules and are assigned to different units based on staffing needs, which can change daily or even during a shift. This means you may need to quickly adapt to various departments, patient populations, and team dynamics. While this variety can be challenging, it also provides the opportunity to gain diverse clinical experience and develop a broad skill set. Most hospitals provide orientation or training for float nurses to ensure they are comfortable working in multiple areas, and you’ll collaborate closely with unit staff to deliver quality patient care.
