Underwriting Consultant This role involves reviewing and approving complex life insurance applications with a high level of independence
The position includes authority to make final decisions on large policies (up to $2,000,000) and to review cases referred by other underwriters. The role may also support projects such as audits, product development, training, systems, and claims. Key Responsibilities Review medical and financial information to assess risk and make underwriting decisions based on guidelines Approve or decline applications, including more complex or higher-value cases Provide guidance and final decisions on cases referred by other underwriters Respond to questions from agents on more complex cases Work with medical directors when needed on difficult medical reviews Build strong relationships with agents and partners Help lead training sessions and share underwriting knowledge with the team Meet team goals for quality, turnaround time, and productivity Handle challenges professionally, including resolving conflicts and adapting to change Understand how decisions impact other teams and processes Additional Responsibilities (as needed): Audits: Review underwriting files to ensure accuracy and consistency Claims: Assist in reviewing certain claims and provide input when needed Product Development: Support new product efforts, including testing and feedback Systems: Help develop or improve underwriting rules and processes Participate in projects as an underwriting subject matter expert Qualifications Education & Experience: Associate degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred 10+ years of life insurance underwriting experience Certifications: FALU designation required LOMA certifications required (Customer Essentials, ACS, FLMI) Salary: $83,000 - $115,000 + bonus Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, 401k with employer match, PTO and tuition reimbursement.
