What is a flight service manager?

Flight Service Managers are airline professionals responsible for overseeing the in-flight service and cabin crew on commercial flights. They ensure that passengers receive high-quality service and that all safety regulations and procedures are followed during the flight. Their duties include supervising flight attendants, handling customer concerns, and coordinating with the cockpit crew. They play a key role in maintaining passenger comfort and safety, as well as ensuring compliance with airline policies.

How does a flight service manager typically collaborate with cabin crew and ground staff to ensure a smooth flight experience?

A Flight Service Manager works closely with both cabin crew and ground staff to coordinate all aspects of in-flight service and passenger safety. They lead pre-flight briefings, delegate responsibilities, and ensure that all team members are informed about specific passenger needs or flight details. Throughout the journey, they act as the main point of contact for resolving issues, maintaining service standards, and communicating with ground staff regarding special requirements or post-flight procedures. This collaborative approach helps maintain a seamless and high-quality experience for passengers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flight service manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Flight Service Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, in-depth knowledge of airline safety procedures, and experience in in-flight service operations, often supported by previous cabin crew experience and specialized training. Familiarity with airline management software, crew scheduling systems, and safety management systems (SMS) is typically required. Outstanding communication, conflict resolution, and customer service skills help you manage diverse teams and ensure a positive passenger experience. These skills are vital for maintaining safety, operational efficiency, and high service standards on every flight.

How do you become a flight service manager?

To become a flight service manager, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with many employers preferring a bachelor's degree in hospitality, aviation management, or related fields. Relevant experience in customer service or airline operations is essential, along with strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; some roles may require certification or training in airline safety and procedures.

How much does a flight service manager make?

A flight service manager typically earns between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the size of the airline or organization. They oversee customer service operations on flights and may require certifications in customer service or aviation safety.

Job description

Leidos is seeking Senior Java Software Engineer - Scrum Master to join the Air Traffic Business Area within the Homeland Sector, supporting the development of next-generation flight service and air traffic systems. This work aligns with the FAA's broader initiative to modernize legacy flight service capabilities, replacing aging infrastructure with scalable, cloud-based platforms designed to improve safety and operational efficiency-particularly in remote and high-dependency aviation environments. These efforts focus on delivering mission-critical, future-ready solutions that provide safety-critical flight services to the pilot community.

This is a hybrid technical role where approximately 50% of your time will be spent designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production software, while the remaining 50% will be dedicated to serving as Scrum Master for an Agile development team. We are looking for experienced software engineers who enjoy facilitating Agile teams while remaining actively involved in coding, technical design, reviews, and software delivery.

As a member of a Scaled Agile software development organization, you will contribute to the technical execution of a program that integrates proven, globally deployed technologies with modern cloud-native capabilities. You will work alongside cross-functional teams and technical leaders to deliver predictable outcomes in a highly regulated, safety-critical environment.

**Please note, this exciting position is currently unfunded and is anticipation of future work.

Candidate must be able to obtain a favorable SF-85P Public Trust suitability determination from the FAA customer. Due to contract requirements, the position requires U.S. Citizenship.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Approximately 50% hands-on software engineering: Design, develop, test, review, debug, deploy, and maintain production-quality cloud-native Java microservices while contributing to software architecture and technical design decisions.
  • Approximately 50% Scrum Master responsibilities: Facilitate Agile ceremonies, remove impediments, promote continuous improvement, and help the team deliver predictable sprint outcomes.
  • Leverage modern DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, AI-assisted development tools, and engineering best practices to accelerate the delivery of secure, high-quality software.
  • Coordinate with the Release Train Engineer, management, and cross-functional stakeholders to communicate team status, risks, dependencies, and delivery progress.
  • Support deployment, operational troubleshooting, and resolution of critical issues in development, test, and production environments.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster collaboration across engineering teams to ensure successful sprint execution and project delivery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with 8+ years of relevant experience or a Master's degree with 6+ years of prior experience. May also possess a Doctorate
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, testing, and reviewing Java applications.
  • 2+ years of experience serving as a Scrum Master on a SAFe Agile team within a large-scale software development environment.
  • Extensive experience with Web development and commonly used front-end tools and languages (React, HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Extensive experience with unit testing tools such as Junit and Mockito
  • Experience with RESTful API, JSON, XML, XSD
  • Significant experience with Spring Framework, Spring Security, and Spring Boot
  • Significant experience with Linux

  • Experience with common development tools and IDEs (Eclipse, VS Code, etc.)
  • Understanding of sound software development principles and practices
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to obtain SF-85 Public Trust (Tier 2) suitability determination
  • US citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or experience with AI-assisted coding (Claude Code, Codex etc.)
  • Knowledge of or experience with microservices and cloud-based environments
  • Knowledge of or experience with Python programming language
  • Knowledge of or experience with Ansible playbooks and YAML
  • Knowledge of or experience with Linux shell scripting
