What is a flight medical escort?

Flight Medical Escorts are trained healthcare professionals who accompany patients during air travel to provide medical care and ensure their safety. They assist patients who are medically stable but require monitoring, medication administration, or support during flights, especially on commercial airlines. Flight Medical Escorts are often nurses or paramedics with specialized training in aviation medicine and patient transport. Their role includes pre-flight assessments, in-flight care, and post-flight handovers to ensure continuity of care. They are crucial for patients traveling long distances who need medical oversight but not a full air ambulance service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flight medical escort, and why are they important?

To excel as a Flight Medical Escort, you need a solid background in emergency medical care, advanced life support skills, and typically certification as a paramedic, nurse, or physician with relevant flight or transport medicine training. Familiarity with specialized medical equipment, patient monitoring systems, and flight safety protocols is crucial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, calmness under pressure, and strong communication are vital soft skills for managing patient needs in challenging and unpredictable environments. These competencies ensure patient safety and effective care during air transport, especially in critical or time-sensitive situations.

What are some common challenges faced by flight medical escorts during international patient transfers?

Flight Medical Escorts often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying aircraft environments, managing patient care with limited medical resources, and navigating complex logistics like customs and immigration for both themselves and the patient. Communication can be difficult due to language barriers or differing protocols between countries. Flexibility, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for overcoming these obstacles and ensuring patient safety throughout the journey.

San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco, CA 94128

landlineco.com

About Us:
The Landline Company (landlineco.com) is an innovative ground transportation company that connects airline passengers to major airports through premium motorcoach service in partnership with airlines including American Airlines, Sun Country, Delta, Jet Blue, and Air Canada.

We are launching service between Schulz–Sonoma County Airport and the San Francisco International Airport, allowing passengers to check in and transfer luggage seamlessly between our vehicles and partner flights.

The Role:
This role will interview in person on Aug 26th and start on Sept 14th.

We're seeking Airport Escort Drivers (Ramp Drivers) to join our San Francisco International Airport team. In this role, you'll operate a vehicle to escort and support our motorcoaches traveling between Schulz–Sonoma County Airport and SFO, including operations within the airport's Airport Operations Area (AOA).

This is a hands-on, safety-critical role where you'll drive on the ramp, marshal and guide buses into position, and help coordinate vehicle movements in a busy airport environment. You'll always work as part of a team, typically two staff per vehicle, so you're never handling passenger operations alone. You'll also play a key customer-facing role: once a bus arrives, you and your teammate manage the full passenger drop-off from start to finish: unloading luggage from the motorcoach, staging bags for airline agents, and personally guiding travelers to the correct Airport entrance.
No prior aviation or security experience is required. Before working independently, you'll complete paid, hands-on training covering AOA driving, airport safety protocols, marshaling, and all verification procedures. Along the way, you'll earn secure airport access credentials and airfield experience that few driving jobs offer.

What You'll Do:

  • Operate a vehicle safely within the AOA (Air Operations Area) and airport ramp environment, following all airport safety protocols and traffic regulations
  • Serve as a ramp escort, guiding motorcoaches and other vehicles safely and marshaling them into position at gates, parking, and drop-off locations through the AOA gate
  • Maintain constant awareness of surroundings in a high-risk, high-traffic environment
  • Track incoming bus status as it approaches SFO
  • Guide passengers safely during drop-offs, working alongside a second team member (typically two staff per vehicle)
  • Welcome passengers, assist with unloading luggage from the motorcoach, and direct travelers to their proper airport entrance
  • Maintain a visible safety presence throughout passenger movement
  • Stage bags for airline handling using proper lifting and safety techniques
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Experience driving in urban and highway environments preferred
  • Ability to maintain focus and situational awareness during extended periods
  • Ability to communicate clearly with drivers and operations staff and execute customer service greetings with passengers
  • Ability to pass a preemployment DOT drug test including marijuana and to participate in random drug and alcohol testing  (this is a USDOT safety-sensitive position)
  • Ability to pass a preemployment criminal background check to obtain a badge to access secure airport locations
  • Ability to work at approximately 5:00AM on any day of the week, including Sunday, Saturday, and holidays.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and company protocols, with attention to detail
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and professional demeanor
  • Reliable personal transportation to and from the work location required
  • Ability to lift up to 70lbs
  • Experience in Airport Operations or Customer Service at SFO is preferred

Shift:
This operation runs 7 days a week, including holidays, with shifts starting around 4:00 AM until around 11:30 PM, and you would need to be available for scheduling in any of these times

We are an equal opportunity employer and consider all qualified applicants equally without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability status.
