About the Role

The TMC Operator is the front-line eyes-and-ears of the Traffic Management Center, monitoring 1,000+ traffic signals (Yunex central control) and 150+ incident-management cameras (Teleste VMS) to keep roadways moving safely. Operators identify incidents and congestion, coordinate with public-safety and DPW field crews, push public information out through social media and roadside DMS/VMS, and make real-time adjustments to signal timing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor incident-management cameras, vehicle speed sensors, traffic speed maps, and signal status displays across multiple workstations
  • Detect roadway incidents and congestion; take appropriate action (notify emergency services / public works, post to social media and roadside electronic message signs, adjust area signal timing)
  • Answer phones and coordinate with office, administrative, and field personnel, as well as other agencies at the municipal, county, and state levels
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned roadway events, lane closures, and road closures within the service area
  • Analyze existing traffic signal timing and coordination; identify and implement adjustments as needed
  • Perform initial troubleshooting of network and communications issues
  • Dispatch maintenance or supervisory staff to address signal, camera, or communications deficiencies
  • Ensure proper back-up and archival of signal timing, speed data, and video
  • During non-peak periods or as assigned, perform signal/ITS work including timing-plan modifications, signal coordination, travel-time studies, and Synchro analysis
  • Support administrative work: reports, public records / FOIL requests, database updates, package prep for shipping
  • During major weather events (hurricanes, nor'easters), large public assemblies, or other emergencies, remain on-site for extended durations and work in two-person teams as needed
  • Maintain availability during non-work hours for emergency callbacks
Minimum Qualifications

  • Education / Experience (one of the following):

    • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university AND a minimum of 1 year of satisfactory experience in traffic engineering, traffic signal inspection, or computer-related work, OR
