Job description

Outreach Educator

Ignite curiosity. Inspire discovery. Take learning on the road.

Creative Discovery Museum's Outreach Educators bring the magic of hands-on STEAM learning directly to schools and community spaces across the region. Through dynamic science, math, art, and integrated learning programs, we spark excitement for students in PreKโ€“8th gradeโ€”helping teachers extend classroom learning and giving children memorable, interactive experiences that make learning fun and accessible.

Outreach Educators love to teach, connect with kids, and bring energy into every space they enter while they deliver standards-aligned lessons. They also support camps and public programs at the museum, and represent CDM at community events with enthusiasm, professionalism, and creativity. They lend their expertise to inform and enhance museum experiences for staff and guests. Every program delivered by an Outreach Educator reflects CDM's commitment to play, exploration, inclusivity, and excellent guest experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Deliver engaging, hands-on outreach lessons and Family Nights using research-based instructional methods that make learning come alive.
  2. Build warm, positive rapport with teachers and schools, modeling effective instructional practices and serving as an ambassador for CDM's educational mission.
  3. Prepare and restock program materials to ensure consistent, high-quality experiences for all learners.
  4. Complete clerical tasks including teacher communication, scheduling confirmations, and distributing or collecting CDM materials.
  5. Facilitate museum programsโ€”including public programs, value-added programs, and reserved programsโ€”using creativity and best practices in informal learning.
  6. Serve as a facilitator during camps, leading activities, managing the classroom, and providing joyful, developmentally appropriate experiences for all campers.
  7. Contribute education, skills and experience to fulfill the content needs of the museum, including areas of licensure and informal expertise.
  8. Employ inclusion practices so all children, caregivers, and teachers feel welcomed, safe, and able to fully participate.
  9. Participate in museum-sponsored events and community outreach, representing CDM with professionalism and enthusiasm.
  10. Engage in museum-wide trainings and meetings as a collaborative, supportive member of the team.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned to support department and museum goals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated excellence as a classroom teacher or facilitator in grades PreKโ€“5, with strong presentation skills, rapport-building, and classroom management.
  • Strong ability to collaborate and build positive working relationships with teachers, children, caregivers, and colleagues.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with the ability to drive a company vehicle and occasional use of a personal vehicle for work-related travel (mileage reimbursed as applicable).
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate clearly with children and adults
    • Adapt to diverse teaching environments and learning needs
    • Work effectively with a variety of personalities
    • Be a flexible, reliable, supportive team member
    • Provide consistent monthly availability throughout the year to support advance reservations and program planning
    • Demonstrate patience, creativity, joy, and high energy
  • Commitment to CDM's core values: play, exploration, inclusivity, and hands-on learning.

Education and Experience Required

  • Degree in Elementary Education or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years teaching and managing children in a self-contained classroom requiring state certification.

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Experience working in team-based environments.
  • Knowledge of area school districts and local curriculum priorities.
  • Experience facilitating programs in informal learning environments (museums, camps, afterschool programs, etc.).

Working Conditions

  • School classrooms and community sites across the region
  • Museum program spaces and offices
  • Primarily Monday-Friday, day and evening shifts, occasional weekend or special-event shifts

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and transport supply boxes up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, move, and teach for extended periods during outreach programs and camps.
  • Must be able to drive to community locations, including schools.
