Job description

Job Summary

As a team member of the outpatient care team, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for coordinating and providing comprehensive (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative) care of the patient undergoing outpatient eye surgery through the appropriate utilization of assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.  The RN is accountable to the Director, Clinical Coordinator and Physicians at Bloomington Eye Institute.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs or assist other team members with patient care procedures and tasks as needed to achieve positive clinical outcomes.
  • Performs thorough patient assessment by observing and collecting data from patient and other appropriate sources to develop an ongoing plan of care.
  • Plans for the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of the patient based on assessment findings and procedure to be done.
  • Collaborates with physicians, care team members, and other disciplines appropriate to the care area in providing patient care.
  • Competently performs patient care in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.
  • Proficient in the use of supplies, equipment and instrumentation at Bloomington Eye Institute.
  • Appropriately delegates tasks to other care team members.
  • Evaluates care given to each patient and revises plan of care as needed.
  • Effectively communicates with other members of the care team.
  • Documents information/data completely on appropriate forms.
  • Works cooperatively with care team members.
  • Effectively and efficiently utilizes resources to minimize cost to patient and surgery center.
  • Is dependable and flexible to ensure adequate staffing at the surgery center.
  • Takes initiative to seek out learning opportunities to increase knowledge and keep current in outpatient eye surgery specialty.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities.
  • Validates competencies of other team members.
  • Identifies and initiates other duties as necessary.
  • Participates in special projects as needed.
  • Assists the care team in identifying and resolving clinical/technical/operational problems.
  • Assists in assuring customer concerns are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Acts as preceptor to new staff learning RN role and validates orientation plan and competencies for staff members.
  • Responsible for and completes assigned annual duties.
  • May be cross-trained and expected to function in multiple areas of the surgery center, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative nursing care, surgical scrub/sterile field support, central sterile processing and instrument sterilization, and limited office or front desk coverage as needed to support patient care and operational needs.

Working Conditions and Environment

  • Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature, etc.
  • Occasional wet surfaces.
  • Exposure to a variety of potentially hazardous substances such as toxic chemicals, blood-borne pathogens, and infectious micro-organisms.
  • Infection exposure risk level is a Category 1, high risk area.
  • Position has required duties that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue.

Qualifications

  • Current State of Illinois license as a Registered Nurse or have letter from Illinois Department of Professional Regulation stating may practice until license is received.
  • CPR certification (ACLS preferred).
  • Must be able to commit to and work effectively in a team environment, taking responsibility to support the team toward achieving positive clinical outcomes.
  • Can perform clinical/technical duties as required.
  • Knowledge of computer system within Bloomington Eye Institute.
  • Previous Ophthalmology, surgery, and /or ambulatory surgery center experience preferred. 
  • Must be able to commit to and work effectively in a team environment, taking responsibility to support the team toward achieving positive clinical outcomes.

Essential Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to read and write, understand English and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Sound interpersonal, organizational, decision-making, problem solving and customer service skills.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to assess both patients’ and care team members’ needs as well as Bloomington Eye Institute operational needs.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Ability to learn care area policies, procedures, and work routines, as well as develop proficiencies in use of equipment and instruments used in care areas.
  • Ability to remain calm and courteous while working under stressful situations.
  • Ability to learn proper use of new equipment/technology; such as Lasers.
  • Flexibility to perform both clinical and administrative tasks as assigned.

Work Requires Ability To

  • Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds on an hourly basis.
  • Carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds on an hourly basis.
  • Stand for three or more hours at a time.
  • Squat and kneel, reach and grab with arms and hands, and utilize manual dexterity continuously.
  • Use a keyboard and video display terminal to enter, retrieve, and transform words or data.
  • Sufficient auditory and visual acuity, including color vision and depth perception, to interact with and/or care for others.
  • Push and/or pull carts, recliners and/or wheelchairs weighing in excess of 200 pounds on an hourly basis.  Includes on level surfaces and inclines.

The Care Team Relationship

The outpatient care team consists of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Physicians, Clinical Technicians, Surgical Technicians, Administrative Assistants, and other disciplines appropriate to the care area.

The care team members are accountable to the patient, the patient’s family, and to the team. The team focuses on thorough assessment, planning and delivery of care to achieve positive clinical outcomes. The care team members also have support from and accountability to professional standards established by specific healthcare disciplines and professions. This relationship provides an additional resource to team members.

The care team is a partnered relationship sharing work in common and making a formal commitment to create healthy interpersonal relationships and to work together consistently. The care team is responsible for providing all aspects of direct patient care within licensure, regulations and Surgery Center policy.

 

Pay:

The starting range for this position is $33.25 - $38.31/hr. depending on skills, experience, and qualifications as well as market considerations.
