Flexible Civil Engineering information

What is a flexible civil engineer?

A Flexible Civil Engineer is a professional who applies civil engineering principles to design, construct, and maintain infrastructure projects while adapting to varying roles, work environments, or project requirements. This flexibility may refer to working on different types of civil projects (such as roads, bridges, and water systems), adapting to new technologies, or having flexible work arrangements, such as remote or part-time work. Flexible Civil Engineers are valued for their ability to quickly learn new skills, collaborate with diverse teams, and respond to evolving project needs. Their adaptability is essential in a field that is constantly shaped by technological advancements and changing societal demands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible civil engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flexible Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, problem-solving, and a relevant engineering degree with professional licensure (such as EIT or PE). Proficiency in software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and project management systems is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork help you manage diverse projects and collaborate with various stakeholders. These skills and qualities ensure you can efficiently deliver innovative and safe infrastructure solutions in a dynamic work environment.

How does a flexible schedule impact collaboration and project delivery in civil engineering roles?

In civil engineering positions that offer flexible schedules, effective communication and coordination become even more important for project success. While flexible hours can enhance work-life balance and productivity, team members must proactively share updates and align their progress through digital tools or regular meetings. This structure often encourages greater autonomy but also requires strong organizational skills to ensure deadlines are met and project standards are upheld. Successful collaboration in a flexible environment typically relies on a combination of clear expectations, accessible documentation, and a culture of accountability.

What other careers can a flexible civil engineer do?

A flexible civil engineer can transition into careers such as construction management, project management, structural engineering, environmental engineering, or consulting. These roles often require knowledge of design, planning, and regulatory standards, and may involve certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) or PMP (Project Management Professional).

Job description

Ready for a new challenge with a multidisciplinary engineering firm that combines a strong sense of community, exciting large-scale projects, and outstanding working conditions?

Whether you join us at our Magog office, located downtown on the shores of Lake Memphremagog, our Montréal office in the vibrant Shop Angus district, or our Québec City office with breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and Château Frontenac, CJA is the place to build a rewarding and stimulating career.

As a Civil Engineer, you will have the opportunity to coordinate civil engineering projects and contribute to the design of urban infrastructure and site development projects, including sanitary and water distribution systems, stormwater management, municipal and roadway infrastructure, and grading. More specifically, you will:

  • Identify client needs and define the project scope;
  • Design a variety of civil engineering infrastructure projects;
  • Perform technical analyses and prepare technical reports;
  • Conduct preliminary engineering studies;
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates;
  • Develop project schedules;
  • Monitor construction sites and provide technical support;
  • Supervise the work of engineering technicians.

To thrive in this role, you should:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering;
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in civil engineering;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or be eligible for membership;
  • Hold a valid Québec driver's licence and be available to travel throughout the province;
  • Demonstrate autonomy and initiative;
  • Be organized and detail-oriented;
  • Have excellent written and spoken French communication skills;
  • Be proficient with Civil 3D software.

Joining our team means enjoying:

  • Five (5) weeks of vacation starting on your first day;
  • A highly flexible hybrid work schedule (37.5 hours/week);
  • A profit-sharing program;
  • Comprehensive group insurance, a health and wellness allowance, and a group RRSP with employer contributions;
  • Access to wellness and health promotion activities;
  • And much more!

Are you more of a craft beer, latte, or fresh fruit kind of person? We offer more than just a dynamic workplace that values work-life balance-we foster a close-knit team where every employee plays an active role in CJA's success.

Ready to enjoy the best of both worlds? We'd love to hear from you. Apply today!
