What is flex time?

Flex time, short for flexible working hours, is a work arrangement that allows employees to choose their start and end times within certain limits set by their employer. Unlike traditional 9-to-5 schedules, flex time gives workers the freedom to adjust their work hours to better suit their personal needs and responsibilities. This can help improve work-life balance, reduce commuting stress, and increase job satisfaction. However, core hours—when employees are required to be present—may still apply, depending on company policy.

How does working in a flex time role impact collaboration with team members who have different schedules?

In a flex time role, team members may start and end their workdays at varying times, which can pose challenges for real-time collaboration. To overcome this, teams often rely heavily on digital communication tools, shared calendars, and scheduled core hours where everyone is expected to be available. Clear communication and proactive planning are key to ensuring projects stay on track and all members remain informed. This structure allows for autonomy while still supporting effective teamwork.
