Navajo Preference Employment Act

Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
Laboratory Runner's functions include transporting and sorting patient specimens and collection kits to and from various departments or locations. This position involves limited clerical duties, supply delivery, equipment movement, cleaning or disinfection, and other activities as assigned.

PROBLEM SOLVING
The lab runner receives work assignments that involve coordination with doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, and other medical professionals to transport laboratory specimens safely to different locations in the hospital through good communication, time management, and self-direction.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT
The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Physical:
This position is very active and requires strength and stamina to be on their feet all day. Work involves prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, crouching, maintaining balance, and reaching. Must also have ability of frequent twisting and occasional sitting and driving. Required lifting for position is ability to frequently lift up to 34lbs and occasionally over 100lbs. Must have ability to frequently push and pull up to 24lbs and occasionally over 100lbs. Sensory requirements involve prolonged ability for far, near, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages, and prolonged telephone use. Hand manipulation requirements include the prolonged ability of simple and firm grasping, fine manipulation, and use of keyboards.
Mental:
The laboratory runner must be able to prioritize and use good judgement and must also be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. A laboratory runner must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations. Mental and emotional requirements for position include ability to cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, manage altercations, concentrate, handle a high degree of flexibility, handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, demonstrate high degree of patience, adapt to shift work, work in areas that are close and crowded, and occasionally work alone.
Environmental:
May be exposed to the following for a prolonged period of time; infectious diseases, chemical agents, and hazardous or moving equipment. May frequently be exposed to loud noises and may have occasional exposure to dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, and unprotected heights.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Follow the established policy, processes and procedures for specimen handling, processing, and maintaining records of patients.
  2. Ensuring specimen transport to the main laboratory according to established turn-around-times.
  3. Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting others, cleans work areas, and transportation equipment, etc.
  4. Demonstrates standard of performance (ownership teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
  5. Creating specimen collection kits and distributing to requesting departments.
  6. Actively participates in the maintenance of Laboratory Accreditation by adhering to standards in safety, performance improvement, document control, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency.
  7. Develops and maintains working relationship with the Medical and Nursing staff regarding the processing and collection of specimens.
  8. Customer service, customer focus, physical fitness, verbal communication, listening, documentation skills, decision making, patient services, health promotion and maintenance.
  9. Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  10. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  11. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
