What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Flex RN?

To thrive as a Flex RN, you need a solid nursing background, current RN licensure, and the ability to work across various units or specialties. Familiarity with multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems and hospital protocols is important, as well as certifications like BLS and ACLS. Strong adaptability, effective communication, and resilience are crucial soft skills for managing changing assignments and patient populations. These skills ensure that Flex RNs can provide high-quality, consistent care while seamlessly integrating into different teams and settings.

What are some unique challenges Flex RNs face compared to staff RNs?

Flex RNs, also known as per diem or float nurses, often work in multiple units or facilities depending on staffing needs. This can present challenges such as adapting quickly to different team dynamics, electronic health record systems, and patient populations. Flex RNs must be highly adaptable, confident in their clinical skills, and proactive in seeking out information in unfamiliar settings. However, this role also provides opportunities to gain diverse experience and build a broad professional network.

What is the difference between Flex Rn vs Travel Nurse?

Flex Rn roles focus on providing flexible, short-term nursing coverage within healthcare facilities, often on a per diem basis. Travel Nurses, on the other hand, take on temporary assignments in different locations, typically for 13 weeks, and often require more extensive travel and accommodation arrangements. Both roles require RN licensure and similar certifications, but their work settings and commitment levels differ.

Do flex registered nurses get paid more?

Flex registered nurses often earn higher pay rates compared to standard RNs due to their ability to work flexible shifts, handle diverse assignments, and meet staffing needs during peak times. Their compensation can also increase with certifications, experience, and working in high-demand specialties or settings. However, pay varies by location, employer, and shift differentials.

What is a flex registered nurse?

A flex registered nurse (RN) is a registered nurse who works on a flexible schedule, often filling in staffing gaps or working in various departments as needed. They typically hold active RN licensure, have strong clinical skills, and may work in hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare settings with adaptable shifts. Flex RNs provide patient care across different units, offering staffing flexibility to healthcare facilities.

Job description

Complex Care Flex RN (Specialty Resource Pool)

The Vibe: Maximum Growth. Premium Pay. Complete Autonomy.

Looking to stack your resume for NP or advanced practice school? Skip the monotony of a single unit. As a Complex Care Flex RN, you will captain your own career. You will step into high-stakes, prestigious specialties every day—including Solid Organ Transplant, Bone Marrow Transplant, Neurosurgery, EMU Monitoring, Advanced Orthopedic Surgery, Plastics and Complex Medical-Surgical Patient Care.

You get the highest-acuity clinical exposure, premium fixed-rate pay differentials, and an incredibly supportive working environment. To guarantee your success, we have dedicated Clinical Support Coordinators available 7 days a week, specifically focused on guiding new RNs through orientation and their first full year. Plus, you will report to a highly engaged, employee-first leader with top-tier internal engagement survey scores to prove it. This leadership team actively champions self-care and balance, ensuring you can deliver elite, quality care while on the clock and completely disconnect when you are off.

The Perks (What's In It For You):

  • Premium Fixed Rates: Lock in top-tier, reliable pay with high fixed-rate differentials.
  • Fast-Track to Advanced Practice: Direct, high-acuity resume building for NP and graduate programs.
  • A Welcoming Culture: Float without the fear—our units actively celebrate, welcome, and integrate incoming pool nurses into their teams.
  • Self-Scheduling: Build your own 4-week calendar and protect your life outside of work.
  • True Work-Life Boundaries: Work for leaders who expect you to be totally off when you are off.
  • Green-Flag Leadership: Work for a supportive, highly engaged leader who actually listens (and has the survey stats to back it up).
  • Unmatched Skill Scaling: Learn transplant immunology, neuro-resections, continuous video-EEG monitoring, complex orthopedic reconstructions, and multisystem medical pathology simultaneously.
  • Pure Clinical Focus: Focus on what you love most—delivering elite care directly to patients alongside collaborative healthcare teams.

What You'll Do (The Day-to-Day):

  • Be the Fixer: Float across elite specialized units to stabilize and support high-acuity patient environments.
  • Manage Complexity: Drive care for vulnerable, fascinating patient populations (cellular therapies, organ recipients, major neuro-resections, epilepsy monitoring, complicated joint and spinal reconstructions, and multisystem medical failures).
  • Deliver Elite Quality: Bring your best self to work, knowing your well-being is prioritized so you can focus entirely on excellent patient outcomes.

The Schedule Logistics:

  • Flexibility First: Complete control over your daily shifts via our self-scheduling model.
  • The Commitment: Only 3 to 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week schedule block.
  • Holiday Rotation: Fair and predictable schedule with assigned major holidays handled on a rotating basis.

Who You Are (The Match/Qualifications):

  • The Learner: You get bored easily. You want deep clinical variety and complex pathology.
  • The Professional: You are a go-getter, self-driven, and highly accountable. You hold an active RN license and have at least 1–2 years of hospital experience.
  • The Future Leader: You have goals. You want mentorship, diverse references, and a resume that stands out to admissions committees.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Colorado, or active multistate licensure.
  • Current BLS with American Hearth Association or American Red Cross.
  • Current ACLS with American Hearth Association or American Red Cross.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school, BSN desirable.
  • At least 1-2 years of hospital RN experience.
  • No travel required! This is a facility float position.
