What is a flex pharmacist?

A Flex Pharmacist is a licensed pharmacist who works on a flexible or as-needed basis, rather than having a fixed full-time or part-time schedule. They may fill in for regular staff during busy periods, cover shifts due to absences, or work at multiple pharmacy locations. Flex Pharmacists perform the same duties as regular pharmacists, such as dispensing medications, counseling patients, and ensuring compliance with pharmacy regulations. This role offers greater schedule flexibility and is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or varied work experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flex pharmacist?

To thrive as a Flex Pharmacist, you need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, active pharmacist licensure, and a strong understanding of medication therapy management and pharmacy operations. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and prescription dispensing software is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and organizational skills help you effectively serve diverse patient populations and collaborate with healthcare teams in different settings. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centered pharmacy services across multiple locations or shifts.

How does a flex pharmacist effectively manage varying work schedules across multiple pharmacy locations?

Flex Pharmacists are often assigned shifts at different pharmacy locations based on organizational needs, which requires adaptability and strong time-management skills. They must quickly familiarize themselves with each pharmacy's workflow, team members, and patient base to provide consistent, high-quality care. Communication is key, as Flex Pharmacists collaborate with various teams and often fill in for colleagues on short notice, ensuring seamless operations. This dynamic environment can provide valuable experience and networking opportunities, but it may also present challenges such as adjusting to new systems and building rapport with new teams regularly.

Unit Highlights

Join the exceptional Beacon Award Winning Nursing team on MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Solid Organ Transplant & Hepatology Intermediate Care Unit (S42) in the recently opened Verstandig Pavilion, situated on Georgetown University's campus. The cutting-edge Verstandig Pavilion is equipped with all-private inpatient rooms and state-of-the-art medical equipment, ensuring an environment that prioritizes excellence in patient care. The Transplant IMC shares a floor with its own Surgical Transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU), promoting seamless patient throughput between different acuities.

This 28-bed unit has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) with a BEACON Award for Excellence through 2026. Clinical Nurses on S42 provide expert care to acutely ill adults that are waiting for or have recently received a solid organ transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine) or have undergone other hepatobiliary surgeries (TACE, liver resection, Whipple). MedStar Georgetown is one of only six centers in the United States that perform intestinal transplants and averages over 100 liver transplants per year. At MedStar Georgetown we also perform kidney and pancreas transplants and serve patients regionally, nationally, and internationally. All beds are equipped to provide continuous cardiac and pulse oximetry bedside monitoring, and nurses are essential in managing high-risk medications and performing in-depth discharge teaching. Nurses work with the interdisciplinary team - including physicians, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners - to deliver intense pre- and post-surgical care that is focused on infection prevention and patient education. The nursing team is a highly educated and motivated group of professionals that participate in collaborative governance, achieve certifications, and drive positive patient outcomes.
