Flex nurses, also known as flexible or per diem nurses, are registered nurses who work on an as-needed basis rather than having a fixed schedule. Flex nurses often have the flexibility to choose their shifts, which allows for a better work-life balance. However, their schedules can be unpredictable, and they may not receive the same benefits as full-time staff.

What does a flex nurse do?

Flex Nurses often work across different units and shifts, requiring strong communication skills and adaptability. They regularly collaborate with permanent staff in each department to quickly understand patient histories, protocols, and unit-specific workflows. Flex Nurses must be proactive in seeking information and clarifications to ensure seamless patient care, especially when adapting to new teams or unfamiliar settings. This dynamic environment provides opportunities to develop a wide range of clinical skills and build professional relationships across the organization.
