What is flex engineering?

Flex Engineering refers to a multidisciplinary approach to engineering that emphasizes flexibility in both skillsets and work environments. Professionals in Flex Engineering are often capable of working across various engineering domains, such as mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, adapting quickly to new technologies and project requirements. This adaptability allows organizations to respond efficiently to changing market demands and project scopes. Flex Engineers may also work in flexible arrangements, such as remote or hybrid setups, and are valued for their versatility and problem-solving abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flex engineer?

To excel as a Flex Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical, mechanical, or software engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree and practical experience in flexible manufacturing or product development. Familiarity with CAD software, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and agile project management tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart in this dynamic role. These competencies are crucial for swiftly addressing engineering challenges, collaborating across teams, and driving innovation in rapidly changing environments.

What are some common challenges flex engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Flex Engineers often collaborate with various departments such as product management, design, and QA, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication styles. Balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders while ensuring technical feasibility requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Flex Engineers must be adaptable, as project requirements may shift quickly, necessitating rapid learning and effective problem-solving. Regular communication and proactive updates help maintain team cohesion and project momentum.

What is the difference between Flex Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectFlex EngineeringMechanical Engineering

Job description

At JetCool, a Flex company, we're at the forefront of liquid cooling innovation, delivering advanced solutions that empower our partners in AI and high-performance computing. United by a shared purpose, our teams are pushing the limits of what's possible and tackling complex challenges. A career at JetCool offers the opportunity to make a real impact by helping build smarter, more sustainable data centers. Together, we're not just advancing technology - we're redefining cooling standards to create a more sustainable tomorrow. Job Summary To support our extraordinary teams who build great products and contribute to our growth, we're looking to add a Product Manager located in Littleton, MA. Reporting to the VP, Design, Process and Technology Engineering, Jet cool Technologies is seeking a dedicated, experienced Product Manager to lead product architecture definition, specifications, design, build, validation, and initial transition to manufacturing for scale-up. Successful candidates will take input from the commercial team, customers, and engineering leadership to define product requirements for each custom solution. The product manager also serves as the direct manager to their engineering team, creating and improving the product through engineering development, testing, characterization, and first article production before handing off production to the operations team. This role involves interaction with executive leadership (product line direction and commercialization decisions), the commercial team (customer and market input and desired specifications), engineering leadership (direct management and technical guidance), manufacturing (successful product transitions), and customers (engineering customizations). What a typical day looks like:

  • Define product specifications, system architectures, and execution plans for custom solutions leveraging JetCool, Flex, and third-party components.
  • Be fluent in mechanical engineering principles for system engineering including pipe flow calculations, thermal engineering calculations, and mechanical drawings.
  • Directly manage and mentor the Dell OEM engineering team, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of new customer solutions and custom integrations.
  • Serve as the primary customer-facing representative for technical discussions, capturing requirements and translating them into actionable solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Sales team to develop proposals, support customer engagements, and deliver tailored liquid cooled server and rack solutions.
  • Apply systems engineering principles to architect solutions combining cooling technologies, server hardware, manifolds, and integration services.
  • Set timelines, milestones, and schedules for successful product development, balancing engineering progress with commercial priorities.
