Position Summary
Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform skilled work involving maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven motors and related auto equipment, machinery and tools. Employee functions at journeyman level to perform routine work with considerable independence, and more difficult work under direct guidance and supervision of the supervisor.
Essential Functions
- Performs general and major overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mowers, and mechanical equipment. Fire Apparatus.
- Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems. Tunes motors using standard testing equipment. Have drivable experience.
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies. Frontend alignments.
- Repairs and perform preventive maintenance on Sheriff's office BMW, and Harley Davison motorcycles.
- Repairs and installs hydraulic controls, and hydraulic lines. Repairs and re- assembles air compressors, and airlines. Repairs fire pumps, valves, and related equipment.
- Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors, magnetos, fuel injection systems, and starters.
- Able to read and understand full wiring diagrams.
- Uses hand and power-driven tools and equipment such as grinders, and tire machine, drill presses, wheel balancer, Snap-On Modis test equipment and welding equipment and other garage shop tools and equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
- During emergencies, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 3-years responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment/machinery maintenance and repair.
- Must possess or obtain A/C Recycling Certification within 6 months of employment.
- Must possess or obtain ASE Certification(s) within 6 months of employment.
- Possess and maintain Class C Florida Driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the assembly, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of general and special automotive and diesel driven equipment.
- Knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to understand, follow and direct written and oral instructions.
- Ability to operate, diagnose and repair a variety of equipment.
- Ability to service any related equipment.
- Skill in operating various automotive repair tools and diagnostic equipment.
Physical Requirements
Physical demand: Moderate
- 75 lbs. maximum lifting.
- Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting and moving of approximately 75 lbs.
- Physical strength to perform manual labor.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
- Good eye sight for production or safety of self and others.
