What are Fixed Income Operations?

Fixed Income Operations refer to the back-office processes and activities that support the trading, settlement, and management of fixed income securities, such as bonds and treasury bills. Professionals in this area ensure the accurate and timely processing of transactions, reconciliation of trades, maintenance of records, and compliance with regulatory requirements. They play a crucial role in mitigating operational risk and supporting the smooth functioning of fixed income markets within financial institutions.

What are some common challenges faced in Fixed Income Operations, and how can new team members effectively navigate them?

In Fixed Income Operations, professionals often deal with high volumes of transactions, tight settlement deadlines, and complex regulatory requirements. New team members may find it challenging to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and compliance. To navigate these challenges, it's important to develop a strong attention to detail, build proficiency with relevant systems (like trade capture and settlement platforms), and communicate proactively with traders, custodians, and other internal teams. Seeking mentorship and clarifying procedures early on can also help new hires adapt more quickly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Fixed Income Operations, and why are they important?

To thrive in Fixed Income Operations, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of fixed income products and financial markets, often supported by a finance or related degree. Familiarity with trade settlement systems (such as Bloomberg, Calypso, or Murex), Excel, and knowledge of industry regulations is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals manage high transaction volumes and resolve discrepancies efficiently. Mastering these skills ensures accurate trade processing, regulatory compliance, and smooth back-office operations within the fast-paced financial sector.

Job description

The opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Manager, Fixed Income Trading to own and elevate Altruist's fixed income trading function. This is a high-visibility hybrid role-senior individual contributor and people leader-with direct exposure to Altruist's leadership team. You will manage a team of traders, own dealer and counterparty relationships, and serve as a strategic partner to Product and Engineering. A central priority will be deepening the integration between Altruist's fixed income platform and Moment-an AI-driven order management system-to unlock smarter execution, greater automation, and a more seamless advisor experience. Equally important will be positioning Altruist's fixed income offering to attract large enterprise RIA firms and compete at the highest level of the independent advisor market. The ideal candidate brings deep fixed income expertise and genuine openness to AI tools-like Claude and others-to work smarter and deliver better outcomes for advisors. You don't need to write code. You need the curiosity to ask what AI can do, and the judgment to put the answers to work.

What you'll do

  • Trading Operations & Execution
    • Lead daily fixed income trading operations across municipal, government, and corporate bond markets-primary and secondary-ensuring best execution, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.
    • Drive pricing transparency, trade automation, and execution quality across Tradeweb, MarketAxess, Bloomberg, and proprietary Altruist tooling.
    • Leverage AI tools to enhance market analysis, streamline trade workflows, and surface execution improvements.
    • Establish and enforce supervisory procedures satisfying FINRA, MSRB, and SEC requirements; serve as senior escalation point for complex trade scenarios and settlement issues.
  • Moment Integration & Enterprise Growth
    • Serve as the primary business voice on Altruist's Moment OMS integration-leading planning, testing, and ongoing optimization to automate order routing and improve execution intelligence.
    • Partner with Sales and Relationship Management to shape Altruist's fixed income value proposition for large enterprise RIA firms, serving as an SME in prospect conversations.
    • Identify capability gaps relative to enterprise expectations and advocate internally for the investments needed to compete at scale.
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Manage and mentor a team of fixed income traders, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and AI-assisted ways of working.
    • Set clear performance standards, coach regularly, and build development plans that retain top talent.
    • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Compliance, and Finance to align trading initiatives with Altruist's broader objectives.
  • Dealer & Counterparty Relationships
    • Own strategic relationships with broker-dealers, primary dealers, and liquidity providers to optimize pricing, access, and market intelligence.
    • Negotiate favorable terms and new issue allocations ensuring institutional-quality access for Altruist advisors.
    • Represent Altruist at industry events, dealer meetings, and counterparty reviews to elevate the firm's market profile.
  • Advisor & Client Service
    • Deliver best-in-class service to Altruist's advisor network-responsive execution support, pricing transparency, and proactive market insights.
    • Use AI tools to enhance the speed and quality of advisor-facing communication and fixed income portfolio guidance.
    • Serve as a trusted fixed income resource helping advisors-including enterprise firms-grow their fixed income AUM with confidence.

What you bring

  • Licenses & Credentials
    • Active FINRA Series 7, 24, 63, 52, and 53 licenses required.
    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience
    • 8+ years of fixed income trading experience; 3+ years in a senior trader, lead trader, or trading management capacity.
    • Deep expertise across municipal, government, and IG corporate bond markets-primary and secondary.
    • Demonstrated best execution track record across multiple market environments, including elevated volatility.
    • Proven dealer relationship management; supervisory experience with FINRA/MSRB/SEC compliance and WSP accountability.
    • Cross-functional experience working with product, sales, or relationship management teams on enterprise client initiatives.
  • Core Competencies
    • Market Structure Fluency: Deep knowledge of fixed income microstructure, electronic trading protocols (RFQ, RFS, all-to-all), and settlement processes (DTC, FedWire).
    • AI Curiosity & Adoption: Genuine eagerness to learn and apply tools-such as Claude, ChatGPT, and others-to make better trading decisions. No coding required; a growth mindset is.
    • Technology Acumen: OMS/EMS fluency (Bloomberg TOMS, Tradeweb, MarketAxess); familiarity with Moment is a strong plus.
    • Leadership: Proven ability to develop trading talent and make difficult personnel decisions with confidence.
    • Communication: Able to translate fixed income complexity for advisors, enterprise prospects, regulators, and executives.

Preferred experience

  • Prior experience at a custodian, RIA platform, self-clearing broker-dealer, or fintech serving the independent advisor channel.
  • Experience supporting enterprise RIA firms, wirehouse breakaways, or large institutional clients.
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools in a professional context-market research, workflow efficiency, or decision support.
  • Familiarity with portfolio management and fixed income analytics platforms (Aladdin, YieldBook, Bloomberg PORT, or comparable).
  • Working knowledge of MSRB EMMA, DTCC systems, IPREO, and/or ALLQ.
