Overview
Plan, implement, and oversee operations and habitat management on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in the northeastern portion of Vermont. Collaborate with other Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife and Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) state land managers on management goals, objectives, and planning on ANR lands, including state forests, parks, and streambank properties. Review and analyze proposed projects on state lands to ensure consistency with policies, guidelines, rules, statutes, and long-range management plans. Research, collect, analyze, and manage data, and maintain databases. Write technical reports, prepare environmental analyses and recommendations for corrective actions/alternatives, administer aspects of state and federal grants, and prepare, develop and present information and education materials for the public. Respond to encroachment issues on WMAs. Provide expert opinion, advice and technical assistance to partners and the public on wildlife management issues. Represent the state in public meetings. Develop and implement technical and administrative documents. Perform related duties as required, including operating biological check stations, among others.
Duties are split between an office and field setting. Fieldwork may occur during all weather conditions and involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Work is performed under the general direction of the state lands program manager. Workstation will be the Fish and Wildlife regional office located at in St. Johnsbury, VT. Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday with a mixture of in-office and fieldwork, but occasional night and weekend work is required. Currently work is hybrid with a requirement for 3 in-office days.
This position does not supervise full-time staff, but may supervise seasonal/temporary staff.
As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 25 will be $31.54 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $49.45 per hour.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in both an office and a field setting. Field work may require traversing rough terrain and bodies of water in all weather conditions. Duties may require work outside of normal office hours. Attendance is required at a variety of public meetings, hearings, and seminars, where strong adversarial opinions and some hostility may be encountered. Private means of transportation may be required for necessary travel.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree or higher in biology or a natural resources field.
OR
Bachelor's degree or higher in biology or a natural resources field AND two (2) years or more of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
One (1) year or more as a Fish & Wildlife Scientist II with the State of Vermont.
