Job description

The Old Globe, a year-round professional theatre company producing more than 14 productions annually on three stages in beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego, seeks candidates for a Firsthand/Assistant Cutter to join our talented Costume Department. This critical role is responsible for pattern making, cutting, and fabrication in one of the finest regional shops.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Works directly with the Draper on all aspects of costume construction and alteration.
  • Cuts fabric based on patterns and prepares patterns for linings, trims, and decorative details.
  • Advises stitchers on the proper techniques and oversees their work to ensure quality and meet deadlines and production needs.
  • Participates in general shop maintenance, as well as participating in storage maintenance, restocking, and other tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will have the following skills and abilities:

  • Extensive experience in a professional theater costume department. Candidates must demonstrate high degree of skill in costume fabrication, pattern making, garment assembly, and stitching. Experience with period (1500’s- 1900’s) garment making is required, as is experience supervising stitchers.
  • This position is full-time hourly Local 122 IATSE position, with occasional overtime. The hourly rate is $29.49. If the selected candidate is not a member of the Union, they will be required to join. The work week is Tuesday through Saturday. Bilingual English/Spanish speaking is a plus and multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.Â
