Overview Boston University (BU) is committed to providing a vibrant, residential education for our ~17,000 undergraduate students. In our undergraduate Schools & Colleges, students gain depth of knowledge in their chosen major. Through the BU Hub, our university-wide general education curriculum, students follow their interests as they gain breadth of knowledge and essential skills. Inside and outside the classroom, our students engage in cutting-edge research, artistic production, innovation and entrepreneurship, experiential learning, and global exploration.
The Student Success team ensures that BU undergraduate students are well prepared to make the most of the vast array of opportunities BU offers. Members of the Student Success team help incoming first-year and transfer students transition to BU academic and campus life, they collaborate with faculty and staff across campus to connect students to academic and cocurricular opportunities and resources, and they support students who encounter personal and academic challenges. In addition, the Student Success team offers programming to foster a sense of belonging and to help students think creatively about their pathways through Boston University and beyond. Responsibilities The Assistant Director of First-Year Student Success (ADFYS) works closely with other Student Success team members to support the academic and personal success of undergraduates during their time at BU.
Reporting to the Director of Student Success in the Provost's Office, the ADFYS supports efforts such as new student orientation and student success seminars, as well as taking on other duties as assigned.
The ADFYS regularly performs the following responsibilities:
- Holistic Advising: Supplements the work of academic advisors in the School/College by meeting and corresponding with students regarding the transition to college, personal interests and goals, academic exploration, and participation in high-impact educational experiences (e.g., research with faculty, experiential learning, study abroad, living-learning communities, and internships).
- Provides 1:1 student success coaching to help students achieve their personal and academic goals.
- Provides support to students experiencing personal and academic challenges.
- Collaborating and Coordinating: Collaborates and coordinates with School/College advisors and staff in central units (e.g., Newbury Center, Undergraduate Pathways Programs, Educational Resource Center, Dean of Students Office, Global Programs, and Student Wellbeing) to create a seamless web of support for undergraduate students.
- Connects students as needed with campus resources that support student academic and personal wellbeing.
- Programming: Creates and implements inclusive programming that fosters engagement with the BU community and promotes a sense of belonging.
- Student Success Seminars: Leads student success seminars that meet general education requirements and that promote academic resilience and student wellbeing. Currently, these seminars utilize the Life Design framework.
- Master's degree and 3 or more years of experience in higher education setting or bachelor's degree and 5 or more years of experience in higher education.
- Interest in student success and the first-year and transfer experiences.
- Experience advising students or student organizations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and exemplary written and oral communication abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Capacity to build positive and collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Highly organized and attentive to detail. Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- This role is eligible to apply for a remote-work arrangement for up to one day per week.
- Some evening work may be required.
