What is the difference between First Manager vs Team Lead?

AspectFirst ManagerTeam Lead
ResponsibilitiesOversees multiple teams, manages department goals, strategic planningGuides a specific team, focuses on task execution, mentoring team members
Required CredentialsOften requires management experience, sometimes a degree in business or related fieldUsually requires experience in the specific team area, sometimes certifications in project management
Work EnvironmentOffice setting, cross-department collaboration, higher-level decision makingTeam-based environment, direct supervision, project-focused

The main difference between a First Manager and a Team Lead lies in scope and responsibilities. A First Manager typically oversees multiple teams and handles strategic planning, while a Team Lead focuses on guiding a specific team and executing tasks. Both roles require leadership skills, but the First Manager's role is broader and more strategic.

What is a first manager?

A first manager is an entry-level managerial position responsible for overseeing a team or department, implementing company policies, and ensuring team productivity. This role typically requires leadership skills, communication abilities, and sometimes relevant certifications or training. First managers often report to higher-level managers and play a key role in team development and operational success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a First Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a First Manager, you need strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and a foundational understanding of business operations, typically supported by relevant managerial experience or a degree in management. Familiarity with project management software, HR systems, and performance evaluation tools is often required. Excellent communication, emotional intelligence, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for effectively guiding teams, achieving organizational goals, and fostering a positive workplace culture.

What are First Managers?

First Managers, often referred to as first-line or frontline managers, are individuals who directly supervise non-managerial employees and are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a team or department. They act as a link between upper management and the workforce, implementing organizational policies and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently. First Managers are typically responsible for training staff, monitoring performance, resolving conflicts, and providing feedback. Their role is crucial in translating company goals into actionable tasks and maintaining employee motivation and productivity.

What is the 70 30 rule in hiring?

The 70 30 rule in hiring suggests that 70% of the hiring decision should be based on a candidate's skills and experience, while 30% should consider cultural fit and soft skills. For a First Manager, this balance helps ensure the candidate can perform technically while aligning with team dynamics and company values.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A First Manager role, such as a sales manager or operations manager, can potentially earn $10,000 or more per month through experience, performance bonuses, and leadership responsibilities. These positions often require strong leadership skills, industry knowledge, and relevant experience rather than formal degrees.

What are some common challenges a First Manager might face when transitioning from an individual contributor to a leadership role?

First Managers often find the shift from executing tasks individually to leading a team to be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most common hurdles is learning to delegate effectively while trusting team members to deliver quality work. Additionally, First Managers must develop strong communication skills to provide feedback, resolve conflicts, and motivate their teams. Balancing their own workload with new responsibilities like performance reviews and team development can also present a learning curve. Support from senior leaders and ongoing management training can help smooth this transition.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

For a First Manager, high-paying roles often include executive positions such as General Manager, Operations Manager, or Director roles in large corporations, which can reach or exceed $300,000 annually with bonuses and incentives. These positions typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and sometimes advanced certifications or degrees. Compensation varies based on industry, company size, and geographic location.

Fusion Senior Field Sales Manager

Position Overview

Fusion is one of Autodesk's fastest growing businesses, and we are building a world class field sales organization to match that momentum. We are hiring a Fusion Field Sales Manager to lead a team of high impact sellers including Fusion Named Account Executives, Fusion Midmarket Account Executives, and Fusion Territory Sales Executives. This leader will drive pipeline, field execution, customer engagement, and quota performance across a diverse set of account types.

This is a frontline sales leadership role for someone who loves being out in front with customers, coaching reps in real sales situations, and holding a high standard on forecast accuracy and pipeline quality. You will manage a mixed team of overlay sellers in Named and Midmarket, as well as primary sellers in Territory. The work requires tight partnership with Autodesk's Named and Midmarket sales leaders to ensure Fusion strategies align with broader account plans.

Autodesk's culture emphasizes curiosity, rapid innovation, and ownership. We believe in "reimagining what is possible," taking smart risks, and pursuing results with urgency. Within Fusion we amplify that mindset with startup speed, accountability, and a bias for action. You'll work on the staff of the Fusion Director of Sales for your region and play a critical role in scaling one of Autodesk's most strategic businesses.

If you are a field-first manager who loves inspecting deals, driving execution, elevating sellers, and shaping the future of a high growth business, this is the kind of leadership role that will stretch and reward you.

Responsabilities

  • Lead a team of Fusion sellers across Named, Midmarket, and Territory motions, ensuring strong execution and consistent customer engagement
  • Coach reps directly in the field by joining customer calls, participating in on site meetings, and modeling high impact selling
  • Drive pipeline discipline, forecast accuracy, and deal inspection using Salesforce and modern sales tools
  • Align closely with Autodesk's Named and Midmarket leadership teams to coordinate account strategies and avoid motion conflict
  • Partner with technical sales, marketing, and channel to accelerate opportunities and build repeatable field motions
  • Maintain a high-performance culture centered on accountability, urgency, and continuous development
  • Fusion revenue performance in your region
  • Pipeline creation, quality, and forecast accuracy
  • Adoption and expansion of Fusion across target accounts
  • Team performance, development, and retention
  • Collaboration and execution across sales segments and technical teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven success as a frontline sales manager in complex software sales
  • Strong field orientation with comfort jumping into real customer conversations to coach or advance deals
  • Ability to lead both overlay sellers and direct sellers with clarity and consistency
  • High standards for pipeline management, forecasting accuracy, and disciplined execution
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across sales segments and cross functional teams
  • Competitive drive, strong business judgment, and a passion for building a winning team
  • fluency in German is a plus

Fusion is reshaping how manufacturers design, engineer, and make products. Autodesk is investing heavily in Fusion field capacity, creating a huge opportunity for leaders who want to build and scale something meaningful. As a Fusion Field Sales Manager, you will guide the team at the center of that growth and directly influence Autodesk's future.

If you want to lead a high performing team and help Fusion dominate the market, we should talk.
