Job description

About OnPay

OnPay is a fast-growing software company headquartered in Atlanta, offering a modern cloud-based payroll, HR, and benefits solution for small to midsize businesses. We’re currently seeking talented and curious individuals to join our team. We want to hear from you if you are interested in joining an exciting and fast-growing company!

Learn more at OnPay.com

The Role

As a Senior Product Owner, you will serve as the hands-on execution lead for engineering delivery within OnPay’s product organization. In our lean, fast-paced environment, this role requires an experienced, tactically sharp PO who thrives on turning business requirements into well-defined, actionable work and keeping engineering teams moving efficiently.

You will own backlog prioritization, untangle complex functional dependencies, resolve tactical roadblocks, and drive features across the finish line. You are the primary bridge between business priorities and day-to-day engineering execution—focused on getting the right work built, built well, and delivered on time.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive Engineering Execution & Delivery: Partner closely with engineering leads and developers to ensure work is well-structured, clearly understood, and progressing toward launch commitments.

  • Tactical Backlog Ownership & Prioritization: Actively manage and prioritize the team backlog, balancing new feature requests, customer bug fixes, technical debt, and operational improvements.

  • Complex Problem Solving & Discovery: Dig into complex business logic, edge cases, system dependencies, and workflows (e.g., payroll calculations, tax rules, third-party API integrations) to produce clear, unambiguous user stories and acceptance criteria.

  • Agile Ceremony Leadership: Facilitate crisp, effective Agile ceremonies—including backlog refinement, story mapping, sprint planning, and daily stand-ups—focused on team throughput and clarity.

  • Unblock & Resolve Roadblocks: Proactively identify dependencies, clear impediments, and negotiate solutions when technical or business challenges arise during a sprint.

  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with Design, Customer Support, Implementation, and Product Strategy to gather requirements, manage expectations, and support smooth release rollouts.

  • Quality & Acceptance: Review completed stories against acceptance criteria to ensure delivered features strictly meet functional standards before release.

What You Bring

  • Proven Execution Track Record: Ability to drive delivery in a lean, fast-moving environment while managing competing priorities.

  • Sharp Tactical Problem-Solving: Comfortable diving into technical details, complex workflows, and data structures alongside developers.

  • Strong Prioritization Mindset: Confident making pragmatic trade-off decisions between speed, scope, and technical quality.

  • Exceptional Communication: Clear, concise story writing and effective meeting facilitation that keeps cross-functional teams aligned.

  • Self-Directed & Proactive: Highly autonomous self-starter who takes ownership of problems and drives them to resolution without waiting for instruction.

  • Pragmatic Agile Mindset: Passion for practical Agile practices that maximize delivery velocity rather than rigid process adherence.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 5+ years of direct experience as a Product Owner or Lead Business Analyst driving software delivery in an Agile environment (Scrum/Kanban).

  • Demonstrated experience handling complex SaaS workflows, B2B software systems, or financial/payroll/HR domain logic (FinTech experience preferred).

  • Hands-on proficiency with tools like Jira, Confluence, Miro, or similar workflow tools.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

  • CSPO, CSM, or equivalent certification is a plus.

Why OnPay?

  • Momentum that matters: We’re backed by over $100MM in new funding and scaling rapidly.

  • Market-leading product: OnPay consistently ranks among the highest-rated payroll solutions, earning top marks for usability, customer satisfaction, and support.

  • Remote flexibility: Work from anywhere in the U.S., or join our collaborative HQ team in Atlanta’s Ponce City Market if you reside in the Atlanta metro area.

  • Competitive compensation: Base salary + bonus + stock options = real upside for high performers.

  • Comprehensive benefits: 4 weeks PTO + paid holidays, Medical/Dental/Vision, Short- & Long-Term Disability, Life Insurance, Fertility Benefits, Parental Leave, and a 401(k) with company match.

  • Growth culture: Join a team with deep employee benefits experience, payroll expertise, market momentum, and a genuine commitment to helping employees grow their careers.

  • Client-first ethos: OnPay is built on a culture of transparency and service — from our transparent pricing to our commitment to making small business simpler.

Location & Compensation

  • Remote (U.S.) | Atlanta HQ Optional

  • Compensation includes a base salary range of $105k - $140k. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
