Job description

The City of East Bethel is currently hiring on-call, paid firefighters for the East Bethel Fire Department. There are multiple openings and this application will stay open until all openings are filled. All initial and ongoing training is provided by the City of East Bethel.
Firefighter Eligibility
All applicants for Firefighter and all on-going firefighters in the East Bethel Fire Department shall meet the following requirements.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be under the age of 65.
  • Have a high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Must submit an application into City Hall in the time frame required for appointment.
  • Must fill out the form and pass a BCA background check.
  • Be able to complete the Department's physical agility test annually.
  • Complete an interview.
  • Pass a medical exam.
  • (MINIMUM) Must have or be able to obtain State Firefighter II Certification within the probationary period.
  • (MINIMUM) Must have or be able to obtain First Responder Certification within the probationary period.
  • Must continue to annually meet all requirements to maintain all certifications held by them.
  • Must follow and meet all requirements of the Fire Department Policies, and guidelines to maintain employment eligibility.
  • To maintain status as a Firefighter, all Firefighters shall be required to undergo and pass an annual SCBA medical examination, and a skills and fitness test.
  • If it is a Special Hire must be able to maintain all requirements set-up at time of appointment/hire to maintain employment eligibility.

Please read: The City of East Bethel does not restrict the Department staffing to only one Firefighter of an immediate family, or close friendships. With this they will be working together, managing each other, and maybe managing other Firefighters together. However, such employment must not create or be perceived as creating a conflict of interest. At all times decisions must be made for the good of the Department. Besides, with the closeness of working together the Department promotes its Firefighters as a family. Following all policies, guidelines should guide all Firefighters in the process to ensure the exception is met for the good of the Department.
Firefighter Minimum Physical Standards
  • Lifting/Carrying
    • Ground to waist level - 80lbs.
      • Dragging/removing fire victims
      • Advancing hose lines at fires
      • Carrying fans, rescue tools, and foam containers
    • Waist to shoulder level - 50lbs.
      • Opening/closing hydrant valves
      • Making hose connections
      • Lifting/carrying ladders, hose, and other equipment
    • Above shoulder - 35lbs.
      • Placing ladders against building
      • Pulling ladder halyard to raise ladder.
      • Using axe and other equipment to ventilate the structure.
      • Lifting items onto fire apparatus
  • Firm Grasp
    • Use/Carrying items of substantial weight, i.e., misc. fire equipment
    • Using axes or sledgehammers
    • Using hydrant wrenches
    • Dragging victims or hose lines
    • Pulling ladder halyard or using rope to lift items.
  • Simple Grasp
    • Carrying items; ladders, hose bundles and various equipment
  • Reaching, Bending, Twisting
    • Picking up and carrying misc. equipment
    • Raising ladders against buildings
    • Opening hydrants
    • Connecting hose lines
    • Using axes, sledgehammers, and rescue tools
    • Must be capable of reaching, extending the hands or arm in any direction
  • Climbing and/or Balancing
    • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolds, ramps and alike using feet and legs and/or hands and arms
  • Crawling, Kneeling, Squatting
    • Advancing hose lines in fire situations
    • Searching for, and removing fire victims
    • Picking up ladders, hoses, and equipment of the ground
  • Vision
    • Normal vision is needed, with or without correction
    • Requires both near and far acuity, depth perception, field of vision and focusing
  • Hearing
    • Normal hearing needed; firefighter must discriminate among similar sounds in environments with a great amount of background noise
  • Speech
    • Must be able to communicate effectively to others in stressful situations
  • Touching, Feeling, and Using Fingers
    • Must be able to discriminate in items by feeling, and manipulate items such as SCBA valves, apparatus controls, alarm panel controls, and nozzle controls
    • Must be able to determine the difference between hot and cold by touch
    • Must be able to use ropes and tie knots
