Palm Beach Fire Rescue offers a unique opportunity to serve and protect while experiencing both personal and professional fulfillment.
Key Responsibilities
The firefighter Paramedic is responsible for providing protection of life and property within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Palm Beach. Personnel in this position routinely work a 48-hour work week, 24-hours on duty followed by 48-hours off. Every third week a 24-hour relief day is appointed. This position may require personnel to work mandatory overtime and personnel may be called back to duty in the event of a major emergency.
Work activities involve fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, public education, and emergency medical services; drive and operate emergency vehicles; use appropriate safety equipment under extremely hazardous conditions; perform station and vehicle maintenance; conduct equipment and supply inventories; execute forms and reports, enter computer data; maintain physical condition and skills necessary to sustain required certifications in fire suppression, fire prevention and basic and/or advanced life support techniques. This job description is not all-inclusive and the Firefighter Paramedic must be able to take directions from supervisors and work within the chain of command to perform all related duties as prescribed by the Fire-Rescue Chief.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be a Certified Firefighter in the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute, Chapter 633 at the time of application. Uploaded documentation required with application.
  • Must currently have the following, required at time of application (upload documentation with application):
    • Certified Paramedic in the State of Florida.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • State of Florida driver's license required.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) completed required at time of application. Uploaded documentation required with application.
  • Must have documentation of completed and current Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT )with in 1 year of the date of final job offer.
  • Paramedics must be signed off by Medical Director within one year of date of hire.

Skills and Competencies
  • Skills and abilities to learn and maintain a thorough knowledge of the Essentials of Firefighting, basic and advanced life support emergency medical procedures, and the Department's rules and regulations, standard operating procedures, and safety policies.
  • Skills and abilities to perform medical interventions appropriate to certification level
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics involving fractions, multiplication, and division required to perform drug and intravenous fluid calculations.
  • Skills and ability to put on and take off personal protective clothing and prepare for reuse, hoist tools and equipment using ropes and the correct knot, and locate information in departmental documents and standard or code materials.
  • Skills and ability to operate heavy machinery such as fire pumpers, aerial platform trucks, rescue trucks, air compressors, and generators under the stressful conditions of fire and medical emergencies.
  • Skills and ability to operate small tools and appliances such as chain saws, circular saws, axes, pike poles, crow bars, hydraulic rescue tools, and fire extinguishers under the stressful conditions of fire and medical emergencies.
  • Ability to learn and maintain a general knowledge of the streets, roadways, fire hydrants, water mains, major buildings, and standpipe and sprinkler outlets located within the boundaries of the Town of Palm Beach.
  • Ability to learn and maintain a general knowledge of private fire protection systems, building construction, boat construction, and water currents and conditions.
  • Ability to learn and maintain a general knowledge of the Florida Fire Prevention Code and Town's ordinances specific to fire prevention.
  • Skill and ability to interpret reports, codes, and ordinances; identify, assess, and execute fire prevention procedures; educate children and adults in fire prevention; and, learn new procedures and techniques.
  • Skills to use a computer, and have the ability to learn to use computer programs for fire inspections, fire and medical reports, equipment inventories, and other related uses.

This is a non-exempt position paid on an hourly basis which is eligible for overtime.
