ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PARAMEDIC/ AEMT:

  • Responds to select medical and traumatic emergencies, as well as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes for inter-facility transfers.
  • Provides emergency medical care at the scene, en route to the hospital, and during facility-to-facility transportation.
  • Performs basic/advanced life support procedures, based upon certification level.
  • Ensures the vehicle and equipment are ready for use at the beginning of the shift and after every call, including cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, restocking, and performing routine maintenance.
  • Performs daily inspections of the base and/or station and conducts appropriate housekeeping duties to ensure living quarters are clean, clutter-free, and sanitary.
  • Maintains all training records for recertification purposes in accordance with NREMT.

FIREFIGHTER:

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies.
  • Leads out hose lines, selects and operates nozzles, and directs the stream of water or foam onto fires.
  • Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper building levels or to assist individuals from burning structures.
  • Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance using manual or mechanical tools.
  • Protects property from water and smoke through salvage and overhaul procedures.
  • Rescues victims from hazardous conditions and performs hazardous materials identification.
  • Participates in training in current firefighting methods and techniques.

Education / Certification / Experience

Required

  • Valid Utah Driver's License.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Utah and NREMT Paramedic or AEMT.
  • ACLS, BLS, and PALS Certifications.
  • Certified Firefighter I & II in the State of Utah (IFSAC or ProBoard).
  • Wildland Firefighter I certification (within 1 year from hire date).

Preferred

  • Associate's Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or related field.

Skills, Abilities, and Requirements

  • Ability to perform effectively as a team leader in patient care situations.
  • Ability to pass a physical fitness test on hiring and yearly.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, using good judgment and common sense with a thorough understanding of emergency medical care principles.
  • Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the city and be able to perform in extreme weather conditions and IDLH atmospheres (hazardous duty).
