Job description

IAM Hourly represented employees who currently work at the main (Sunnyvale/Palo Alto) unit, Santa Cruz, VAFB or Eastern Range facilities must apply to open requisitions on Brass Ring to be considered for the position.
This occupation requires the installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification
of plant air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration systems, and equipment, including
low temperature cascade systems, Building Automation Systems (BAS) and steam
boiler, gas-fired heating equipment (excludes installation of ducts and utility feed lines).
Operate centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, hot water and steam boilers and air handling
systems per manufacturers' recommendations and management directives. Determine,
by making periodic inspections, the repair and maintenance work necessary to prevent
functional breakdowns requiring major overhaul of air conditioning, ventilation and
refrigeration systems and equipment, including low temperature cascade systems, and
gas-fired heating equipment. Make working sketch of parts by taking measurements
directly from equipment in need of repair, record material requirements and specify any
necessary machining operations for use by others.
Overhaul air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration systems and equipment, including
low temperature cascade systems, by repairing or replacing crank shafts, bearings,
pistons, valves, piston rings, condensers, coils, thermostats, humidity, and other
mechanical units. Charge system with refrigerant, check and test for leaks; set and
adjust controls and regulators and make functional tests after major overhaul operations.
Repair associated hydronic, hot water/chilled water systems, vacuum and pneumatic
control equipment. Fabricate copper tubing, hoses and fittings as required.
Overhaul heating equipment by disassembling heater, diagnosing trouble, replacing or
repairing worn and faulty parts such as burners, baffles, pilots, governors, floats,
strainers, pumps and thermocouples. Reassemble, install and functionally test heating
equipment. Calibrate and make any adjustment required.
Use the BAS computers to monitor and control individual building heating, ventilating and
air conditioning (HVAC) equipment for purposes of monitoring equipment and building
conditions, fault detection, change temperature control points and HVAC systems
analysis/performance.
Troubleshoot and analyze input and output of HVAC stages for HVAC systems by reading
voltages, hand held microprocessors and other observations. Adjust circuit boards and
modules as needed. Work on all 24 volt or less AC/DC HVAC control systems and make
necessary repairs.
Check and calibrate systems after their original installation or after any major overhaul
operation and make necessary adjustments to achieve operational efficiency.
Work at various heights. Assist maintenance craftworkers in other fields of specialization
when so assigned.
Perform modification and rework wherein the operations are essentially the same as the
work described herein.
Work from blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications and manuals.
Work with liaison personnel and may verbally suggest design changes for engineering
approval when the system cannot be installed as designed, or does not meet functional
demands or where such changes will simplify fabrication, installation or maintenance of
the system.
Use any equipment, tools, materials or information source necessary to perform the
above duties.
