Location: Primarily Technical Education Center (TEC), however, assignments may include any KCKCC location or sites as designated by the appropriate administrator.


SUMMARY

Serve as an adjunct instructor for classes offered in the Fire Science program.
This is a POOL position. Application materials for this adjunct position are accepted on an on-going basis due to increasing demand for courses in this subject area.


POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Prepare course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  • Provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance, including current grades in course(s) taught.
  • Convene the assigned class in accordance with college policy.
  • Use instructional methods that emphasize application, cooperation, and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills.
  • Organize and explain content using methods appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences.
  • Assign and provide feedback for out-of-class work; monitor student progress.
  • Perform student and course assessment according to college requirements.
  • Comply with standards, policies, and procedures of KCKCC, Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
  • Comply with the Committee on Accreditation for Fire Science standards and policies, training labs standards and policies, and KCKCC and program standards and policies.
  • Utilizes student-centered and active learning teaching strategies.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  • Other duties as assigned to advance the program and institutional missions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of best practices in fire science.
  • Knowledge of assessment of student learning in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of active learning instructional strategies.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to utilize various equipment and procedures commonly seen in firefighting.
  • Ability to multitask to meet multiple demands.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a multi-culturalย population.
  • Ability to operate various computer and audio-visual equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree.
  • Five (5) years (or the equivalent) as a full-time Certified Firefighter with experience in a variety of settings, including Hazmat and EMS.
  • Current IFSAC certifications for Firefighter 1 & 2, Hazmat Awareness & Operations, Instructor 1
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience as a training or classroom instructor.
  • Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard.
  • Experience in learner-centered pedagogy.
  • Teaching experience in an open-enrollment, urban community college.

WORK SCHEDULE
Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. Your appointment is contingent on sufficient enrollments, or on program and scheduling changes.
