Introduction
The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute.
What We Are Looking For: DSPS is looking for a new member to join our Fire Suppression/Fire Alarm Plan Reviewer team as a Fire System Plan Reviewer (Consultant - Fire Suppression Systems Advanced). The individual will possess working knowledge of engineering principles and have the ability to work independently.
Where We Are Located: This position can be headquartered out of the following locations: Madison, Green Bay, Waukesha, La Crosse, or remotely working out of their home location. This position currently allows the option to work remotely up to 5 days per week. All employees are generally expected to telework and work within the State of Wisconsin. This position will be required to come into the office for training, meetings and/or operational needs. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for consultation and performing high level training, on the most complex technical applications of fire protection systems, regulation issues to staff, contractors, designers, municipal agents, and utilities, including participation in the application, interpretation and enforcement of the contractor certification, fire alarm, detection, and suppression codes. This position spends a significant amount of time providing technical support in this specialty area and reviews the most complex fire protection system plans. This position will be involved in developing written examinations for contractor and designer credentialing, including updating exams for periodic code revisions, and performing question analysis of exams to ensure validity of questions. Duties include:
  • Conduct preliminary reviews, consultations, and communicate code applications for the specific project.
  • Document code violations through interviews, documents, reports, photographs, etc.
  • Communicate with designers, contractors, and owners regarding the status of plans.
  • Provide consultative services to contractors, inspectors, and other state agencies.
  • Analyze petitions of variance and prepare final decision of approval or denial.

Salary Information
This position is in schedule-range (14-13) with an annual salary of $78,000 - $89,440 plus excellent benefits. $1.00 per hour add-on maybe added for a Designer of Engineering Systems license, a Professional Engineer license, or an Architect registration. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications
Qualified applicants will have working experience with all the following:
  • Design, installation, and/or the review of automatic fire sprinkler systems, building fire alarm systems or alternate fire extinguishing systems.
  • Working with commercial building codes and national design standards.
  • Communicating technical requirements to internal or external customers.

A well-qualified applicant will have five or more years of working experience in one or more of these areas.
