Building codes are a vital component of modern building design and construction. Compliance with the codes ensures the health and safety of building occupants. The code consultant role provides professional consultation with clients on building, fire, plumbing, energy, and accessibility codes to support the client’s needs on construction and building engineering projects.

• Provide code-related consulting services to clients in the architectural, real estate investment & management, and building engineering industries.
• Consulting services include; but are not limited to; providing code analysis and interpretation via email, phone call, and in-person or remote meetings; drafting memos to address code issues; meeting with local officials and fire departments on the client’s behalf; and supporting the in-house engineering and design teams.
• Perform design reviews of proposed projects including plan review for egress, life safety, fire safety, accessibility, and plumbing; draft reports outlining applicable code requirements and analyzing whether the proposed project meets the requirements; and perform zoning reviews of proposed projects.
• Perform on-site building surveys to assess code compliance with respect to building, fire, accessibility, or plumbing codes.
• Draft survey reports outlining the findings of the survey and suggested remediation of non-compliant conditions.
• Collaborate with project teams to design solutions to challenges in building design and construction where strict code compliance is not possible (Compliance Alternatives).
• Prepare and submit code variance requests to state-level boards as needed.
• Prepare life safety architectural drawings using AutoCAD.
• Perform surveys of existing fire protection systems. Draft reports outlining findings and assess issues and remaining useful life.
• Perform reviews of the storage and use of hazardous materials in various industries. Draft reports summarizing the risks and risk mitigation strategies being used.
• Prepare design solutions such as fire modeling, egress modeling, and structural fire-resistance analyses.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Engineering is required. Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred.
• Familiarity with ICC and NFPA codes is required.
• Background in Architecture, Construction, and Fire Protection is preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years experience in the architecture, construction, or building engineering industries. A more senior consultant would be considered for this role.

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is a must.
• Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing abilities.
• Must be outgoing and able to professionally interact with staff, clients and building owners.
• Must be able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Must always respect clients and co-workers, ability to present clearly and articulately to a wide range of audiences.
• Must have high level of analytical skills. Work requires continual attention to detail with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including but not limited to, Microsoft Office applications and computer-assisted engineering and design software.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical reports or journals, financial reports and legal documents.
• Ability to write scopes-of-work, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, and other technical documents.
• Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients. Capable of effectively presenting information.
• Ability to accurately read, interpret and understand technical documents such as codes, engineering cut sheets, building plans, and guidance documents.
• Ability to independently manage time and project workloads.
• Ability to work independently and on project teams.

$130,000 - $180,000 and is dependent on education, experience, location, and certifications/licensure.

Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. Client’s office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). Employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, work from stationary and moveable scaffolding (aka swing stages), bend, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary.

This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. There will be periods where overtime will be required, which the employee will need to comply with in order to meet the demands of the position.

This position requires up to 25% local/regional travel. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required. Expected regular travel in the Greater Boston Area, but may include some national and international travel.
