Job description

United Support Services, Inc., founded in 2003, is an innovative engineering and technology business headquartered in San Diego, CA. We have an exciting new opportunity and are currently looking to add a Marine Electrician to our berthing barge and messing maintenance team, supporting the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine area, onboard U.S. Navy vessels and all facilities tasks related to work areas. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of electrical trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of electric energy
  • Install or repair any of a variety of electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment; working from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or other specifications
  • Locating and diagnosing trouble in the electrical system or equipment; working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment; and using a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments
  • Skilled in the use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital voltmeters, frequency and pulse generators, and special test panels
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, wrenches, and soldering irons and in the use of micro-soldering techniques
  • Skilled in the set-up and operation of computer controlled automatic test equipment to test and troubleshoot various components and assemblies of electronic equipment or printed circuit boards
  • Able to assist engineering personnel in developing, debugging, or modifying diagnostic programs by recommending changes where necessary and identifying and investigating apparent contradictions between test specifications or test requirement documents and test programs
  • Locate malfunctions; determine the proper kind and type of parts and material required and completes the repairs or installations
  • Follow or refer to blueprints, manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders as needed
  • Per contract requirements, must be able to respond to urgent calls outside of regular working hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience:
  • Berthing Barge and Messing experience preferred.
  • 4 years electrical experience required
  • Understanding of industrial U.S. Navy ship repair activities, as well as ship layout, configuration, control plates, placards, markings, and symbols.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Navy shipboard equipment.
  • Understanding of ship electrical power, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and isolation, hot work, confined spaces work, and fire-watches (Fire Safety Watch requirements).
  • Ability to read technical manuals, policies, guidelines, and repair standards.
  • Good verbal communication skills, report writing skills, and responsible to work independently at times.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have Security Clearance.
  • Must have valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass a government background check and obtain base access credentials.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes, no less than 50lbs.
  • Must be able to work on and climb ladders.
  • Be able to work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as assigned which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions as well as working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

ADA Notations:
Ability to traverse narrow passageways, ladders/stairs, and confined spaces.
Requires walking, reaching, sitting and concentration in the presence of occasional noise.
Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight.
Special Conditions:
This employment position is CONTINGENT upon a contract award to employer for the required services, completion of applicant's favorable employment background investigation, and the ability of applicant to obtain a military base access card and security clearance at all times during the period of employment.
