What are Fintech Programmers?

Fintech Programmers are software developers who specialize in creating technological solutions for the financial industry. They design, build, and maintain applications related to banking, investments, payments, and other financial services, often using advanced programming languages and frameworks. These professionals work on projects such as mobile banking apps, trading platforms, blockchain technology, and financial data analysis tools. Their expertise helps financial institutions innovate, improve security, and enhance the customer experience in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

What are some unique challenges Fintech Programmers face when developing financial applications?

Fintech Programmers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high security and compliance with strict financial regulations while developing applications. They must design systems that can handle sensitive financial data, prevent fraud, and meet industry standards such as PCI DSS or GDPR. Additionally, integrating with legacy banking systems and third-party APIs can be complex, requiring robust error handling and real-time data processing skills. Collaboration with compliance officers, product managers, and QA testers is essential to deliver reliable, secure fintech solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fintech Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fintech Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, along with a solid understanding of financial systems and algorithms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with financial APIs, blockchain technology, cloud platforms, and tools like SQL databases is typically required, and certifications in areas such as AWS or cybersecurity can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and adapting to regulatory changes. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and innovative development of financial technology solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

Role Overview

As Senior Director, Product Management (Fintech), you own the vision and strategy for Payments and Risk at Housecall Pro. You are accountable for the outcomes that define this domain, including attach and usage, payments GMV, net take and losses, and you lead by prioritizing the solutions our Pros and internal customers actually need over delivering features. You thrive in the strategic and handsโ€‘on, balancing the development of longerโ€‘term roadmaps that lead to business impact with the dayโ€‘toโ€‘day execution of product delivery. You manage a highโ€‘performing team of Product Managers and grow them into the next generation of product leaders, and you partner closely with Engineering, Design, Risk, Analytics, and Strategy and Operations to align everyone on where we are going and how we will get there.

What you do each day
  • Set the longโ€‘term product vision and strategy for the payments and risk domains
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) focused on payments GMV, engagement, and net take opportunities
  • Support your PMs to develop a set of Objectives and Key Results, and deliver on the projects to achieve this vision
  • Lead a team of Product Managers, providing coaching to grow the next generation of product leaders
  • Develop your product managers as builders who use AI tools and processes to accelerate individual and team velocity in delivering impactful, highโ€‘quality solutions to customers
  • Bring AI solutions into the product as a core engine to drive cashflow for our Pros
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering and Risk to build robust, scalable payments and risk infrastructure as foundational platform services
  • Operate across the business as the product lead for Risk, ensuring the product org and broader business understand risk exposure and build solutions with these considerations in mind
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in product management, with at least 7 years in a leadership role
  • Proven track record of leading large product teams and successfully launching products in B2B SaaS or vertical SaaS
  • Deep expertise in payments, ideally within modern providers (i.e., Stripe, Square) or vertical software platforms
  • Direct background or exposure to Risk domains and the protections necessary for delivering financial products
  • Proven experience driving team efficiency or output quality through the strategic use of AI tools and automation
What will help you succeed
  • Fluency in AI product building, having personally shipped AIโ€‘native features
  • Exceptional judgment and "product taste," with the ability to guide teams toward simplicity and customer value
  • Moves quickly and executes with urgency, maintaining a strong bias for action while balancing sound judgment
  • Outcomeโ€‘oriented mindset that prioritizes collective team success
  • A rich portfolio of active, selfโ€‘directed exploration showing either an exceptional breadth of crossโ€‘functional interests or a profound depth of specialized mastery; alongside the personal resilience to learn from scratch, and successfully thrive in ambiguity
Salary and Compensation

This role is open to candidates and the expected salary range for this role is $159,000-$198,000 + bonus + equity. The specific salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on permissible, nonโ€‘discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location. This role is also eligible to participate in Housecall Proโ€™s equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance (medical, dental, vision, disability), employee assistance program, 401(K), flexible time off, paid parental leave, tech reimbursement, and other company benefits.
