What are FinOps Engineers?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

What is the difference between Finops Engineer vs Cloud Engineer?

Finops Engineers focus on managing and optimizing cloud costs, working closely with finance and operations teams. Cloud Engineers build and maintain cloud infrastructure. While both roles require cloud platform knowledge, Finops Engineers specialize in cost management, making them distinct yet complementary roles in cloud environments.

How does a FinOps Engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Engineer acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams by translating technical cloud usage data into actionable financial insights. They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

Job description

Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior FinOps Engineer to drive significant cloud cost savings and financial accountability across the customer's organization. This role requires a unique blend of deep development/engineering skills, solution architecture expertise, and FinOps best practices to design, implement, and govern cost-efficient cloud solutions. The successful candidate will embed a culture of cost optimization within engineering teams and architect forward-looking, financially responsible cloud strategies. As a member of a multi-cloud configuration team, the selected individual will be required to be part of an agile scrum team and be knowledgeable in numerous development tools and technologies. We are glad to consider engineers that have the attitude to solve complex problems without static solutions.
What will you do?
  • Establish, evangelize, and govern FinOps policies and best practices across multi-cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Proactively analyze resource usage to eliminate inefficiencies, such as rightsizing instances, terminating unused resources, and tuning architectures for lower costs.
  • Tracking cloud spends, generating reports, and setting up alerts to identify and remediate billing anomalies.
  • Creating dashboards to report on cost KPIs to stakeholders.
  • Developing and enforcing cloud budgets and forecasts.
  • Purchasing reserved instances or savings plans and evaluating new tools or technology to reduce costs.

Do you have what it takes?
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years in cloud engineering, with a focus on cost optimization.
  • Deep expertise in AWS (Cost Explorer, Budgets), Azure, or GCP.
  • Understanding of cloud financial management, cost allocation, and tagging strategies.
  • Experience with rightsizing, spot instances, reserved instances, and auto-scaling.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets to identify savings opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex technical/financial concepts for both executive and engineering audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and drive cultural change regarding cost accountability.
  • Strong analytical skills with a focus on problem-solving and proactive opportunity identification.

Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience supporting the Open-Source Network.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) certification.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate/Professional.
