What is a financial planner?

A Financial Planner is a professional who helps individuals and organizations manage their finances and plan for their financial future. They provide advice on topics such as budgeting, investing, retirement savings, tax strategies, and estate planning. Financial Planners work closely with clients to understand their financial goals and develop personalized plans to achieve them. Many Financial Planners hold certifications, such as Certified Financial Planner (CFP), which demonstrate their expertise and commitment to ethical standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a financial planner?

To thrive as a Financial Planner, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial products, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, often supplemented by certifications like CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Proficiency with financial planning software, portfolio management tools, and CRM systems is essential. Exceptional interpersonal communication, ethical judgment, and active listening set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building client trust, developing effective financial strategies, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

What challenges do financial planners face when building a client base, and how can they be addressed?

Financial Planners often find that establishing a strong client base is an initial hurdle, as trust and credibility are critical in this field. Many planners overcome this by networking extensively, seeking referrals from existing clients, and consistently demonstrating value through tailored financial advice. Leveraging technology, participating in community events, and maintaining professional certifications can also help build reputation. Persistence, excellent communication skills, and a genuine interest in clients’ financial goals are key to long-term success.

What is the difference between Financial Planner vs Financial Advisor?

AspectFinancial PlannerFinancial Advisor
CertificationsCFP, ChFCCFP, Series 7, Series 66
Work EnvironmentIndependent or firm-based, comprehensive planningBank, brokerage, or independent, investment-focused
Primary FocusHolistic financial planning including retirement, estate, taxesInvestment management and product sales
Employer & Industry UsageFinancial planning firms, independentFinancial institutions, banks, brokerages

While both roles involve helping clients manage their finances, a Financial Planner provides comprehensive, long-term financial planning services, often holding CFP or ChFC certifications. A Financial Advisor may focus more on investment management and may hold additional licenses like Series 7 or 66. The roles often overlap, but the Financial Planner emphasizes holistic planning, whereas the Financial Advisor may concentrate on investment products and portfolio management.

How much do financial planners get paid?

Financial planners typically earn a median annual salary of around $89,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $50,000 to over $200,000 depending on experience, location, and client base. Many financial planners also earn commissions or fees for their services and often hold certifications like the CFP to enhance earning potential.

Job description

Imagine being part of an organization that challenges and inspires you to do your best work, where you're encouraged to refine your expertise, expand your capabilities, and contribute meaningfully from day one. At Embarc Advisors, we prioritize professional growth, value innovative thinking, and recognize the impact of each team member. Join us, and be part of a firm where your potential is cultivated and your achievements are genuinely rewarded.
About Embarc Advisors
Founded by a former Goldman Sachs investment banker and McKinsey & Co. consultant, Embarc Advisors was built to challenge the traditional extremes of finance careers. We offer a different path, a high-performance and high-learning environment in a human-centered environment. Our firm delivers best-in-class advice across M&A, capital raising, outsourced corporate development, and strategic CFO services, supporting clients through every stage of the company lifecycle.
We've built a team of corporate finance professionals with backgrounds in investment banking, private equity, consulting, strategic finance, and investment management, individuals who thrive on challenge, continuous improvement, and delivering results. We've helped clients close complex M&A transactions, raise capital from early-stage seed to $100M+ growth rounds, and scale profitably as their long-term CFO partners.
At Embarc, we see ourselves as an elite sports team, united by trust, driven by shared purpose, and anchored in values like Kaizen, excellence, and perseverance. Our internal operating system (EOS) brings structure, accountability, and alignment to how we execute and grow. This mindset and system allow us to attract ambitious professionals and purpose-driven clients alike-those ready to do the real work and unlock meaningful value.
At Embarc, we offer something different and compelling: the opportunity to build a sustainable, values-aligned career in finance, where you grow fast, contribute meaningfully, and stay in the game for the long haul.
Embarc Intro Deck here:
Role Overview
Job Type: Full time
Position Location: Remote
We are hiring a content marketing specialist with a specialist's ear for finance. You will be responsible for implementing the voice of the firm: Write/create content, post the thought leadership our partners publish, the LinkedIn presence that reaches founders of current and potential clients, CEOs, private equity sponsors, and deal intermediaries, and the campaign execution that turns that attention into qualified conversations.
You will work with senior staff, mine their experience for insights, and translate technical corporate finance - M&A, working capital pegs, EBITDA adjustments, FP&A, LOI-to-close dynamics, 13-week cash flow - into content a founder actually wants to read. The ultimate objective is to reach and influence buyers of our services.
The critical qualification: you must be able to write credibly about deals. We are looking for someone who has spent 3-5+ years marketing inside or adjacent to investment banking, private equity, transaction advisory, or a comparable financial services environment. Candidates should have M&A, PE, or corporate finance experience to be very successful here.
Detailed Responsibilities
  • Content Writing & Thought Leadership
    • Write and edit long-form thought leadership: articles, market commentary, sector perspectives, and point-of-view pieces on M&A, diligence, and CFO-level topics
    • Ghostwrite for the Managing Partner and practice leaders - capturing each voice distinctly rather than producing house-style filler
    • Develop case studies and client success narratives from completed engagements, working within confidentiality constraints
    • Produce the sales-enablement layer: capability decks, one-pagers, service-line collateral, proposal language, and email sequences
    • Build and maintain the editorial calendar, aligned to the firm's quarterly rocks and practice-group priorities
    • Interview partners and clients to source original insight; you will be the one making sure the pipeline of ideas never runs dry
  • LinkedIn & Social Media Marketing - LinkedIn is our primary channel. Treat it as such.
    • Own the Embarc company page end to end: posting cadence, audience growth, engagement, and analytics
    • Plan and execute paid LinkedIn campaigns - Lead Gen Forms, Sponsored Content, Thought Leader Ads - including audience construction by title, firmographic, and sponsor/intermediary segment
    • Design and execute targeted campaigns aimed at referral-source segments: private equity business development professionals, lenders, attorneys, wealth advisors, and other intermediaries
    • Monitor competitor and peer-firm positioning; identify white space in the conversation
  • Light Design & Visual Production
    • Produce on-brand visual assets in Canva social graphics, carousels, report covers, event materials, and web imagery
    • Build and format presentations in PowerPoint to the firm's visual standard
    • Turn data and financial analysis into clean, readable charts and infographics
    • Maintain the brand asset library, templates, and style guidance so quality holds as volume increases
  • Marketing Execution & Operations
    • Assist by executing in HubSpot: email builds, workflows, lists, landing pages, and forms
    • Pay close attention to marketing data hygiene and reporting integrity, with practice-group segmentation intact
    • Assist in preparing reports on the marketing scorecard weekly - MQLs, SQLs, source attribution, content performance, page and channel metrics - and bring the "why" alongside the number
    • Assist with webinars, conference presence, sponsorships, and speaking opportunities from logistics through follow-up
    • Maintain and improve the website: content updates, SEO and AEO fundamentals

Qualifications
Required:
  • 3-5+ years in marketing, content, or communications, with direct experience in investment banking, private equity, transaction advisory, corporate finance, or professional services serving those markets
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrably strong business writing - you will be asked for samples, and we will read them closely
  • Working fluency in corporate finance concepts and deal process
  • Hands-on LinkedIn marketing experience covering both organic strategy and paid campaign management
  • Proficiency with a marketing automation/CRM platform; HubSpot strongly preferred
  • Practical design capability in Canva, plus advanced PowerPoint
  • Comfort operating with autonomy in a lean environment - you will own outcomes, not just tasks

Preferred:
  • Experience marketing to a lower-middle-market or middle-market founder/CEO audience
  • Ghostwriting experience for senior executives or partners
  • Experience building a marketing function from an early stage rather than inheriting a mature one
  • Basic video editing or podcast production
  • SEO, AEO, and web analytics fundamentals

Why Join the Embarc Team?
We offer:
  • The agility and influence of a fast-growing firm where your contributions shape the business
  • The intellectual rigor of top-tier advisory work without the burnout culture of traditional finance
  • A strong culture of trust, ownership, and continuous learning
  • A fully remote work environment, supported by structured operations (EOS) to keep us aligned and effective

Our benefits include:
  • Competitive compensation plus semi-annual performance bonuses
  • 401(k) with immediate vesting and employer match after one year
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Unlimited vacation time and paid sick leave
  • Short-term disability insurance
  • Three team offsites per year, to connect, recharge, and grow together

At Embarc, you won't just build your resume, you'll build a fulfilling career with people who are as committed to excellence as they are to each other.
