What is a financial data analyst?

Financial Data Analysts are professionals who collect, process, and analyze financial data to help organizations make informed business decisions. They use statistical tools and financial modeling techniques to interpret data, identify trends, and forecast future financial performance. Their work supports budgeting, investment strategies, risk assessment, and overall financial planning. Financial Data Analysts often collaborate with other departments to provide insights that drive business growth and efficiency.

What does a financial data analyst do?

Financial data analysts examine financial records and prepare comprehensive reports for their company. These reports are used to identify the current direction of production and help managers forecast future trends. As a financial data analyst, your job duties include compiling data from the market and various departments within the company, analyze the information, and create reports for upper management. The qualifications to pursue a career as a financial data analyst include a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field and industry experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial data analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of finance and accounting principles, and a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, Python, and financial modeling software, as well as certifications like CFA or FRM, are often expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills set exceptional analysts apart in interpreting and presenting complex data. These skills are vital for delivering accurate financial insights that inform business decisions and drive organizational success.

What are some common challenges financial data analysts face when communicating their findings to non-technical stakeholders?

Financial Data Analysts often encounter the challenge of translating complex quantitative data and statistical analyses into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders. This requires not only a deep understanding of financial concepts but also strong communication skills to present data visually and narratively. Bridging this gap can involve tailoring presentations, using data visualization tools, and focusing on the business implications of the analysis rather than technical details. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as finance, operations, and management, is key to ensuring that data-driven recommendations are understood and implemented.

Job description

Talcott Financial Group* is an international life insurance group and the industry's trusted partner for comprehensive risk solutions. Talcott creatively designs and expertly delivers responsive solutions that transfer risk and manage capital in a way that supports the strategic needs of insurers today and into the future.
Talcott Financial Group has a proven track record of well-executed transactions, and the enterprise benefits from its strong financial position with over $130 billion in assets under management, its investment-grade financial strength ratings, and its partnership with Sixth Street, a leading global investment firm.
Talcott Financial Group's two core business platforms include: U.S. based Talcott Resolution and Bermuda and Cayman based Talcott Re.
Overview:
The Finance Data & Integration Lead is a senior individual contributor within the Finance organization responsible for bridging Finance requirements with enterprise data and system execution. This role owns the definition, documentation, and validation of finance data requirements particularly those supporting Data Lake structure and downstream feeds into Oracle FAH and related finance systems. The position ensures financial data is accurate, auditable, and fit for close, reporting, and regulatory needs while partnering closely with Accounting, Actuarial, IT, and the Finance Systems team. Our selected candidate will also provide guidance to Finance, IT, and Finance Systems teams related to finance data requirements, mappings and validation. This role serves as a resource, not as the owner of Oracle system setup, development, or implementation. Responsibility for managing and planning the Oracle platform including its configuration and roadmap belongs to the Finance Systems team. Additionally, this role is responsible for handling Finance requirements, mapping data, validating processes, and providing Finance approval for policy administration systems, data lakes, and accounting feeds.
Responsibilities:
  • Own Finance requirements related to data flows, integrations, reporting dependencies, and Retail initiatives across enterprise platforms.
  • Lead Finance support for Retail initiatives, partnering with IT and cross-functional stakeholders to document requirements, support financial close activities, design and document operational workarounds, and ensure successful implementation and operational readiness.
  • Translate accounting, reporting, and operational needs into clear functional and data specifications for IT, Finance Systems, and cross-functional business teams.
  • Define and maintain source-to-target mappings from operational systems through the Data Lake into Oracle FAH and other finance systems.
  • Partner with Finance to ensure mappings support chart of accounts, journal logic, dimensions, reporting attributes, and financial close requirements.
  • Perform Finance-side test planning, testing, reconciliation, and validation of data, processes, and accounting feeds; develop test scenarios and validation criteria, identify issues, and coordinate remediation with IT and business teams.
  • Provide Finance sign-off for data accuracy, completeness, and operational readiness prior to deployment.
  • Support Finance governance by establishing and maintaining data definitions, standards, requirements documentation, process documentation, testing artifacts, and operational procedures.
  • Support audit and control documentation related to finance data flows, system integrations, testing activities, business requirements, and operational processes.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in finance transformation, finance systems, data integration, or consulting
  • Prior experience at a large consulting firm strongly preferred
  • Experience in financial services or insurance environments preferred
  • Experience supporting audit, SOX, or regulated reporting environments a plus
  • Strong understanding of accounting, general ledger, subledger, and financial close processes.
  • Ability to translate complex finance and accounting requirements into clear data and system specifications
  • Experience working with data lakes, data warehouses, or enterprise data platforms in a finance context
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across Finance, IT and Finance Systems teams
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in complex, regulated environments with multiple stakeholders

Compensation:
This range represents the minimum and maximum annual base salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. The actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range. The base pay is based on factors including but not limited to experience, competence, and demonstration of proficiencies essential for the role. The base pay is just one component of Talcott's total annual compensation for employees. Other compensation may include annual bonuses, long-term incentives and recognition.
*This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without current or future visa sponsorship.
**Talcott Financial Group is an equal employment employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, ancestry or citizenship status, genetic information, pregnancy status or any other characteristic protected by law.
