Job description

The Controller for Thrivent Bank is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of the Bank's financial & regulatory reporting, accounting operations, and internal controls. This role provides strategic and operational leadership across accounting, close, reporting, and regulatory support activities while ensuring compliance with GAAP, banking regulations, and Thrivent policies. The Controller partners closely with the CFO, Finance, Risk, Treasury, and enterprise teams to support business decisions, regulatory expectations, and sustainable growth. This role plays a critical leadership position in strengthening controls, scaling processes, and enabling transparency across the Bank.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads all accounting operations for Thrivent Bank, including general ledger,monthendandquarterendclose, financial reporting,callreportingand balance sheet governance.

  • Ensures the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial statementsin accordance withU.S. GAAP, regulatory requirements, and Thrivent accounting policies.

  • Overseesinternal controls over financial reporting, including documentation, testing support, issue remediation, and continuous improvement of control effectiveness.

  • Serves as a key partner to Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, and externalauditors;coordinates audits, examinations, and regulatory requests.

  • Providestechnicalaccounting guidance on new products, transactions, system changes, and business initiatives, ensuringappropriate accountingtreatment and risk mitigation.

  • Partners with Treasury, FP&A, and business leaders to support forecasting, capital planning, liquidity reporting, and strategicdecisionmaking.

  • Leads, coaches, and develops ahighperformingaccounting team;establishesclear expectations, builds capability, and ensuresappropriate successionplanning.

  • Drives process standardization, automation, and continuous improvement to improve efficiency, scalability, and data quality.

  • Maintains strong governance over accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, ora relatedfield.

  • CPArequired.

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roleswithin banking or financial services.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.

  • Demonstrated experience leadingmonthendclose, audits, and regulatory interactions.

  • Proven ability to lead, develop, andretainhighperformingteams.

  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, and ability to navigate complex issues with sound recommendations

Preferred:

  • Experience in a regulated banking environment.

  • Prior experience partnering with regulators, external auditors, and enterprise risk teams.

  • Experience with system implementations, accounting automation, or process transformation initiatives.

  • Advanced degree (MBA orMaster's in Accounting).
