ABOUT WATSON ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION
Watson Electrical Construction is a leading provider of electrical contracting services, specializing in delivering high-quality solutions for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller to join our growing team in Wilson, North Carolina.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations of the company, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting. This role partners closely with executive leadership to provide strategic financial insight while maintaining strong internal controls and compliance. The Financial Controller will lead day-to-day accounting functions, direct the preparation of financial statements, and drive continuous improvement in financial processes within a dynamic and fast-paced construction environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the company's financial operations, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to senior leadership, providing insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Establish, monitor, and enforce internal controls to ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations.
  • Partner with project managers and department leaders to track project costs, revenues, and profitability.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of tax filings, including sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze financial data, identify variances, and implement corrective actions where needed.
  • Drive process improvements and support financial systems optimization.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional development and accountability.
  • Lead special projects and support executive initiatives as required.
  • Partner with other departments, like Human Resources and Operations, on shared projects and processes
  • Coordinate external and internal audits and liaise with audit team and any regulatory agencies as may be required
  • Stay current with changes in accounting standards and regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Proven ability to lead financial operations and manage accounting functions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a strong commitment to accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Skilled in time management, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Spectrum, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic cnrironment

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education : Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience Required
  • CPA or CMA designation.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction or related industries.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting and internal controls
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel)

Working Conditions:
  • All work is performed in the office environment.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week, overtime as required, and night shift if needed.
  • May need to travel to divisions for meetings or accounting related activities.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch when maneuvering the office environment
  • Listen and communicate using both verbal and written feedback. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Maintain a high level of consistent cognitive function.
  • Perform consistent keyboarding/computer use in a typical office environment for extended periods of time up to 8 hours per day
