Position Overview

Location: Columbus, OH (On-site / Hybrid)

We are seeking an entry-level Accountant to join Hexion's Financial Shared Services team in Columbus, Ohio. This role prepares journal entries, account reconciliations, and supports the monthly close for the shared services accounting areas.

The Accountant will contribute to a timely and accurate month-end close, partner with regional controllership and shared services counterparts, and support ongoing process improvement initiatives.

The group's accounting areas span the key sections of the financial statements including cash, debt and interest, intercompany, fixed assets, product costing, and lease accounting (ASC 842). This role is expected to cover a subset of these areas - with the specific mix assigned based on team needs and the candidate's development goals - and to broaden over time. This breadth provides strong exposure across the controllership function and multiple paths for professional growth.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-career accountant to build a strong technical foundation within a global manufacturing company.

Job Responsibilities

Accounting Areas:

  • The Financial Shared Services group performs accounting across the financial statements including the areas below. This role is expected to cover a subset of these areas - not all of them - with the specific mix assigned based on team needs, workload, and the candidate's development goals:
  • Cash Accounting: daily bank reconciliations across multiple accounts and currencies, and recording of cash receipts, disbursements, and transfers.
  • Debt & Interest Accounting: journal entries for borrowings and repayments, debt amortization and interest accrual schedules, and support for quarterly and annual debt reporting in coordination with Treasury.
  • Intercompany Accounting: processing of intercompany invoices, loans, and management charges under transfer pricing policies, intercompany reconciliations with global counterparts, and monthly netting and settlement.
  • Fixed Asset Accounting: maintenance of the fixed asset subledger in SAP (additions, transfers, disposals, retirements), capital expenditure and construction-in-progress (CIP) accounting, and monthly depreciation.
  • Product Costing: support for standard cost development and the monthly cost roll for raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods, including bill-of-material (BOM) and routing cost data in SAP.
  • Lease Accounting: accounting for global leased assets under ASC 842, including the lease subledger and related balance sheet reconciliations.

Journal Entries & Account Reconciliations:

  • Prepare and post journal entries as part of the monthly close process, including accruals, prepaids, and reclassifications.
  • Maintain accurate and complete supporting documentation for all entries in accordance with company policy and internal controls.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and resolve open or reconciling items in a timely manner.

Month-End Close & Reporting:

  • Complete assigned close tasks within established deadlines.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reporting packages, variance analysis, and management reporting.
  • Provide supporting documentation and analysis in response to audit requests, including control documentation.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Using AI tools to identify and recommend opportunities to streamline accounting processes and reduce manual effort.
  • Support documentation and maintenance of desktop procedures and accounting policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 0-2 years of accounting experience; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic understanding of U.S. GAAP and general accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, basic formulas).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively across global teams.
  • Experience with SAP and BlackLine, a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI tools, a plus.
  • Desire to learn and grow in a dynamic finance environment; CPA candidate or intent to pursue CPA certification preferred.
