Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Minor assembly of component parts for the preparation of parts prior to painting; and preparation of surfaces and painting of completed components and assemblies, working under general supervision.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: Pressurized and hand operated painting devices. Paint brushes, cans, solvents, wire brushes, rags, hand tools for the making of name plates, gums, labels, gaskets, filter cartridges and filter material; hoists, electric or air; small motorized tools such as nut runners, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, hammers, masking tape, blending equipment, and fork trucks.
SOURCE OF SUPERVISION: Foreman
WORKING PROCEDURE:
  1. Receives instructions relating to job and interprets specifications and instructions relating to type and color of paints to be applied, and loading of filters, reclaimers and related equipment.
  2. Sprays surfaces of manufactured products, machines or working areas with paint, enamel, or lacquer, using spray gun or brushes.
  3. Cleans grease and dirt from product using lacquer thinner, turpentine, prepared solvents.
  4. Applies masking tape over parts and area that are not to be coated.
  5. Fills dents and cavities with putty or similar substance to attain smooth surface.
  6. Selects and mixes coating liquids to produce desired colors, according to specifications, using paddle or mechanical mixer.
  7. Coats areas inaccessible to hand sprayer using hand brush.
  8. Cleans spray and hand equipment.
  9. May remove rust or baked paint or enamel by means of wire brushes or sanding discs.
  10. Assembles relief valves, cover assemblies, center tubes, and applies tags or labels to identify parts or products.
  11. Prepares work records and other allied paper work as required to carry out the primary function.
  12. Keeps work area in clean, safe and orderly condition not including work generally performed by janitors.
  13. Fulfills responsibility for dimensional and quality conformance of completed work to applicable specifications and quality standards.
  14. Performs all other tasks that may be required to carry out the primary function.

PREREQUISITES: Must have minimum of 1 year painting experience or documented schooling / certification in automotive or industrial paint application. Experience and training to be approved by management only. Advancement to Labor Grade 4, Senior Assembler Painter, is automatic after working 2 years in the position. Employees with less than 2 years in the classification can be moved to Sr. Assembler Painter at the sole discretion of management.
