What is film photography?

A Film Photography job involves capturing images using traditional film cameras instead of digital ones. Film photographers work in various fields, including fine art, fashion, documentary, and commercial photography. They must understand film types, manual camera settings, and darkroom or lab development techniques. Many film photographers also scan and edit their images digitally for publication or display. This role requires patience, technical skill, and an appreciation for the unique aesthetic of film.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in film photography, and why are they important?

To thrive in film photography, you need a deep understanding of manual camera operations, film types, lighting techniques, and darkroom or lab processes, often supported by a formal education in photography or fine arts. Familiarity with analog cameras, light meters, film scanners, and traditional darkroom equipment is key, and certifications or workshops in film development can be beneficial. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help a film photographer stand out. These skills are essential to produce high-quality, compelling images and to successfully collaborate with clients and creative teams.

What are some common challenges faced by film photographers in today’s digital-dominated industry?

One common challenge for film photographers is sourcing quality film stock and processing materials, as many suppliers now prioritize digital equipment. Additionally, film photographers often have to educate clients about the time and costs associated with analog processes compared to digital workflows. Adapting to hybrid team environments where digital photographers and editors predominate can also require strong communication and collaboration. Despite these challenges, film photography remains valued for its unique aesthetic and artistic approach, giving skilled practitioners a niche advantage in creative and commercial markets.

How much do film photographers make?

Film photographers typically earn between $30,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and whether they work freelance or for a company. Skilled photographers with a strong portfolio and technical knowledge of film and darkroom processes tend to earn higher salaries or freelance rates.

Tomorrow Taste

Los Angeles, CA • On-site

$90 - $130/hr

Job description

How Tomorrow looks and moves is not decoration, it is most of what a partner meets before they ever taste anything. This is one team and two crafts: the people who build the surfaces and the people who fill them.

The role

You'll design, build and feed everywhere Tomorrow meets the world: the site, the launches, the partner-facing work, and the film and photography that carry it. We are hiring across both crafts, so apply to the half you are strong in and say which one.

What you'll do

On the front end, build fast and precise interfaces in React and TypeScript, with motion that feels deliberate rather than decorative. On content, shoot, edit and art direct the film, photography and social work that makes a protein feel like something you want to eat.

What you'll bring

For front end, strong React and TypeScript and an eye that catches a two pixel error. For content, a reel or a portfolio and the range to go from a lab bench to a plated dessert in the same week. For either, taste you can defend out loud.

Next.js, motion and WebGL work, design systems, or a body of food and product photography and short form film.

Where you'll be

This role is based in San Carlos or Los Angeles and works on site with the team. Tomorrow is small enough that the work happens in the room, and we would rather you were in it.

Why Tomorrow

Tomorrow designs proteins that carry taste, built from natural amino acids rather than found in a field. You'll work on ingredients that ship in products people actually buy, on a team small enough that you touch the whole problem, from the sequence to the label. The reason to come is the mission: a generation's health is decided at the table three times a day, and we would rather rebuild what is on it than argue about willpower.

Taste it for yourself.
