How much do file transfer sftp jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for file transfer sftp in the United States is $17.74, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $18.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does sftp file transfer work?

SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) used by File Transfer Sftp roles operates over an SSH (Secure Shell) connection to securely transfer files between client and server. It authenticates users through passwords or key-based methods and encrypts data during transfer to ensure confidentiality and integrity, making it suitable for secure file management in various environments.

What is a File Transfer SFTP specialist?

A File Transfer SFTP specialist is a professional who manages and oversees secure file transfers using the SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) system. Their responsibilities often include setting up SFTP servers, configuring user access, troubleshooting transfer issues, and ensuring that sensitive data is securely transmitted between systems. They also maintain proper security protocols and may work with teams to automate and schedule regular file transfers. This role is crucial for organizations that prioritize data security and need to comply with regulatory standards for data exchange.

What is the difference between File Transfer Sftp vs Network Administrator?

AspectFile Transfer SftpNetwork Administrator
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of SFTP protocols, security, and basic networkingRequires certifications like CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, and broader networking skills
Work EnvironmentFocuses on secure file transfer processes, often in IT or cybersecurity teamsManages entire network infrastructure, including servers, routers, and security systems
Industry UsageUsed across industries for secure data transfer and file managementUsed in IT departments across various sectors to maintain network health

File Transfer Sftp specialists focus on secure file transfer protocols, while Network Administrators oversee entire network systems. Both roles require networking knowledge but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is SFTP still in use?

SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) remains widely used in roles involving secure file transfer and data management. It is a standard method for transferring files securely over SSH, and many organizations rely on it for compliance and data protection. Job roles requiring SFTP skills often involve server management, scripting, and security best practices.

Which is better FTP or SFTP?

For a File Transfer Sftp role, SFTP is generally considered more secure than FTP because it encrypts both commands and data, protecting sensitive information during transfer. FTP transmits data in plain text, making it vulnerable to interception. SFTP is preferred in environments requiring secure file transfers and compliance with security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a File Transfer SFTP Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a File Transfer SFTP Specialist, you need a solid understanding of secure file transfer protocols, networking fundamentals, and experience with SFTP server/client configurations, often supported by a degree in IT or related certifications. Familiarity with tools like OpenSSH, WinSCP, MFT solutions, and knowledge of encryption standards are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help ensure secure and efficient data exchanges. These competencies are crucial for protecting sensitive information, maintaining compliance, and supporting seamless business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing SFTP file transfers, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing SFTP file transfers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data security, handling large volumes of files, and troubleshooting connectivity issues. Security is paramount, so staying updated with encryption protocols and regularly reviewing access permissions is critical. Additionally, automating routine transfers and monitoring logs can help prevent errors and improve efficiency. Effective communication with system administrators and end users also plays a key role in swiftly resolving any issues that arise.

Is ftps outdated?

FTPS (FTP Secure) is still used in some environments, but it is considered less secure than SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), which is more widely adopted for secure file transfers. Many organizations are transitioning to SFTP due to its stronger security features and better compatibility with modern security standards.
