5th Grade Science Teacher Job Description

Position Summary

The 5th Grade Science Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned science instruction that promotes critical thinking, inquiry, and student achievement. The teacher will create a positive learning environment, use data to drive instruction, and support all students in mastering grade-level content in preparation for state assessments.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality science instruction aligned to TEKS and district curriculum
  • Implement hands-on, inquiry-based lessons that promote student engagement and deeper understanding
  • Use formative and summative assessment data (including CFAs) to drive instruction and interventions
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including special populations
  • Maintain a structured, safe, and positive classroom environment
  • Integrate literacy and math skills into science instruction when appropriate
  • Prepare students for success on state assessments (STAAR)

Instruction & Planning

  • Collaborate with grade-level team during PLCs to plan instruction and analyze student data
  • Develop and implement Tier 1 instruction and provide targeted Tier 2 supports
  • Participate in MTSS processes, including data meetings and intervention planning

Assessment & Data

  • Administer and analyze common formative assessments and benchmarks
  • Track student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of grades and student performance

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and campus initiatives
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
  • Follow all district, campus, and state policies and procedures
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions and responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate (Core Subjects 48 or Science 48 preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of 5th grade science TEKS and instructional best practices
  • Ability to analyze data and adjust instruction to improve student outcomes
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching upper elementary or middle school science
  • Experience with STAAR-tested grade levels
  • Familiarity with MTSS, PLC processes, and data-driven instruction

Work Environment
