Job description

Field Service Engineer

If you're passionate about engineering, diagnostics, and solving real-world vehicle challenges, this role is for you. As a Field Service Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of technical problem-solving—partnering with engineering and service teams to enhance vehicle reliability, streamline service operations, and deliver exceptional support to technicians and customers alike.

Job Description

The Field Service Engineer provides advanced technical engineering support to the Service Department, resolving complex vehicle system issues and driving product and service improvements. This role serves as a key technical liaison between Engineering, Warranty, Production, and Field Service operations, ensuring accurate service documentation, effective troubleshooting support, and continuous enhancement of vehicle reliability and serviceability. The Field Service Engineer also contributes to the creation of technical training materials and service documentation, helping field technicians and customers address real-world challenges efficiently and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical engineering support to field service technicians during complex troubleshooting and repair situations, stepping in on escalated issues when challenges extend beyond the field team’s capabilities.
  • Assist with diagnosis and engineering evaluation of mechanical, electrical, multiplex, and high-voltage vehicle systems when elevated technical support is required.
  • Technical Specialist on complex issues, collaborating to develop effective and practical solutions.
  • Develop, revise, and support engineering drawings, schematics, layouts, brackets, and service-related design improvements that enhance vehicle reliability and serviceability.
  • Lead and support root cause analysis activities, ensuring implementation of corrective actions related to recurring field concerns and warranty trends.
  • Lead troubleshooting activities involving repeat failures, complex system-level issues, and unclear root causes, creating engineering solutions suitable for real-world application.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Warranty, Production, and Service teams to improve vehicle reliability, serviceability, and overall product support.
  • Assist with the development and review of technical service bulletins, troubleshooting guides, repair procedures, and other service documentation to support field operations.
  • Work collaboratively with the Field Service Trainer to develop technical training materials, presentations, manuals, videos, and customer support documentation.
  • Participate in customer support visits, technical meetings, prototype reviews, and field campaigns as required to address technical concerns and gather field feedback.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing vehicle downtime and improving customer satisfaction through better service practices and product enhancements.
  • Review field feedback and provide recommendations for product improvements and service enhancements based on real-world performance and reliability data.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, engineering revisions, and support records to ensure traceability and consistency across service and engineering activities.
  • Support special projects and other engineering-related service initiatives as assigned, contributing technical expertise and practical solutions.
  • Apply strong troubleshooting skills to identify, analyze, and resolve issues across electrical, mechanical, multiplex, and high-voltage vehicle systems.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in engineering, technical support, field service, heavy-duty vehicle, or a closely related industry.
  • Proven experience supporting troubleshooting, product improvements, warranty support, root cause analysis, or serviceability initiatives.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex system-level issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical documentation accurately.
  • Knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle systems, including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, suspension, door, multiplex, and powertrain systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a structured approach to root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products for documentation, analysis, and communication.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across multiple departments and functional teams.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required certifications or training related to vehicle systems, high-voltage systems, or customer site access requirements.
  • Ability to occasionally travel in support of customer visits, field activities, and technical meetings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting field repairs, reliability improvements, or serviceability enhancement initiatives.
  • Ability to develop practical engineering solutions that support field repairs and improve serviceability.
  • Familiarity with CAN/J1939 diagnostics and vehicle communication networks.
  • Familiarity with heavy-duty vehicle electrical and multiplex systems.
  • Understanding of high-voltage and battery-electric vehicle systems.
  • Familiarity with CAD or drafting software for supporting engineering drawings and layouts.
