What are field operations?

Field operations refer to the activities and tasks performed outside of a traditional office environment, typically at client sites, construction locations, or in the field. These operations involve managing teams, coordinating logistics, overseeing projects, and ensuring that work is completed according to standards and schedules. Field operations are crucial in industries such as construction, energy, telecommunications, and utilities, where hands-on oversight and real-time problem-solving are necessary. Professionals working in field operations often handle troubleshooting, equipment management, and client communication on-site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field operations professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Field Operations, you need strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and relevant industry knowledge, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with field management software, GPS tracking systems, and safety certifications like OSHA are commonly expected. Excellent communication, leadership, and adaptability help you coordinate teams and respond to on-site challenges effectively. These skills ensure efficient operations, maintain safety standards, and drive successful project outcomes in dynamic field environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a field operations role and how can they be managed?

Field Operations professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating logistics across multiple locations, managing real-time problem solving, and ensuring clear communication between field teams and headquarters. Adapting quickly to unexpected changes, such as weather or equipment failures, is crucial. Successful field operations specialists develop strong organizational skills, use effective mobile communication tools, and foster collaborative relationships with both onsite teams and office-based colleagues to overcome these hurdles.

Job description

Location: This position is based out of the Sacramento or American Canyon location; applicants must currently reside in the local area
Position Overview

A Plus Tree is looking for an experienced Field Operations Manager to lead and develop our field teams while driving safe, efficient, high-quality, and profitable tree care operations.

This is a highly visible leadership role for someone who understands tree care from the ground up and is ready to make an impact beyond a single crew. The Field Operations Manager will oversee approximately 5–8 crews, their Crew Leads, and supporting field personnel, helping our teams perform at their best while delivering exceptional service to our clients.

Success in this role requires a balance of people leadership, technical tree care expertise, operational discipline, and financial awareness. You’ll coach and develop Crew Leads, improve field performance, champion our safety culture, manage fleet and operational resources, and work closely with Client Success to ensure our crews are scheduled and deployed effectively.

This is also a hands-on leadership position. When operations require additional support, the Field Operations Manager may step into the field as a floater Crew Lead, working alongside our teams and leading tree care operations when needed. Staying connected to the work allows this leader to understand field challenges firsthand, maintain high-quality standards, and lead by example.

For someone who loves tree care but is equally passionate about developing people, solving operational challenges, and building high-performing teams, this is an opportunity to have a meaningful impact across a much larger part of the organization.

What You’ll Lead

People & Field Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Crew Leads and their teams, creating clear expectations around safety, quality, productivity, and professionalism.
  • Support the onboarding and development of new team members while providing ongoing coaching and training to existing employees.
  • Conduct bi-annual performance evaluations and provide consistent feedback that helps employees grow and succeed.
  • Build strong employee engagement through communication, accountability, recognition, and team development.
  • Help reduce turnover by creating an environment where field employees are supported, challenged, and equipped to perform at a high level.
  • Maintain a visible, hands-on presence in the field and step in as a floater Crew Lead when operational needs require additional leadership or capacity.

Operational Performance

  • Oversee the performance of approximately 5–8 crews and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, professionally, and according to job plans.
  • Monitor key operational metrics including crew productivity, labor utilization, on-time completion, job margins, COGs, and overtime.
  • Identify opportunities to improve crew utilization, productivity, job execution, and profitability.
  • Partner closely with Client Success to review schedules, prioritize work, optimize crew capacity, and keep jobs moving efficiently.
  • Proactively address staffing, scheduling, equipment, or operational challenges that could impact production.
  • Regularly communicate field performance, profitability, safety metrics, and crew productivity to executive leadership and Client Success.

Safety & Quality

  • Champion A Plus Tree’s safety culture and ensure crews consistently follow company safety policies and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and reinforce safe work practices in the field.
  • Ensure required PPE, fire-fighting equipment, vehicles, and operational equipment are properly inspected, available, and functional.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship across pruning, removals, rigging, climbing, and other tree care operations.
  • Ensure yard locations remain organized, safe, environmentally responsible, and aligned with TCIA compliance standards.
  • Maintain required continuing education credits and stay current on industry certifications, standards, and best practices.

Fleet & Resource Management

  • Oversee effective fleet and equipment utilization across assigned crews.
  • Coordinate maintenance and inspection schedules to help minimize downtime and maintain operational readiness.
  • Monitor fleet-related costs and identify opportunities to improve utilization and control expenses.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment meet company safety and inspection requirements.
What You Bring
  • Proven hands-on experience in tree care, forestry, arboriculture, or a related field service environment.
  • Demonstrated experience performing tree work, including pruning, removals, rigging, and climbing.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience coaching, developing, and holding teams accountable.
  • Working knowledge of job costing, labor utilization, margins, COGs, and operational KPIs.
  • Strong understanding of tree care safety standards, equipment practices, and vehicle inspections.
  • Ability to balance field leadership with operational and financial responsibilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to changing field conditions, staffing needs, and operational challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across Field Operations, Client Success, and leadership.
  • Comfort using job management, safety reporting, and fleet management technology.
  • Valid driver’s license and applicable industry and safety certifications.
  • Commitment to maintaining required continuing education and industry credentials.
What Success Looks Like

The Field Operations Manager is successful when our crews are safe, supported, productive, and consistently delivering quality work.

You’ll know you’re making an impact when Crew Leads are becoming stronger leaders, teams are executing jobs efficiently, schedules and field capacity are aligned, equipment is ready when crews need it, safety expectations are consistently upheld, and the operation is meeting its productivity and profitability goals.

Most importantly, you’ll help create an environment where our field teams have the leadership, tools, accountability, and support they need to succeed.

Benefits:

Health insurance, Dental insurance, Vision Insurance, Life insurance, Paid Sick Leave, PTO, and 401(k).
